Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Author Davies, T. Witton (Editor) Title The Century Bible: Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther. Introductions, Revised Version with Notes, Index and Map Publication Details Edinburgh: T.C. & E.C. Jack, circa 1900s. Printed by permission of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Condition Very Good. Original publisher's binding in very good condition with minimal shelf wear commensurate with age. Binding remains sound and secure. Internally clean and well preserved. Ownership inscription and Ex Libris bookplate of Reverend Dr David Monkton to the front endpaper. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the text, notes, index and map remaining highly presentable. Description A handsome volume from the highly regarded Century Bible series, presenting the Books of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther with scholarly introductions, the Revised Version text, extensive explanatory notes, an index and map. Edited by the distinguished biblical scholar Thomas Witton Davies (1851-1923), Professor of Semitic Languages and a respected authority on the Old Testament and Hebrew studies, this work represents an important contribution to early twentieth-century biblical scholarship. The Century Bible series sought to make the best contemporary biblical scholarship accessible to clergy, students and lay readers alike, combining rigorous academic research with practical usefulness. Davies's commentary explores three of the most significant post-Exilic books of the Old Testament, examining the restoration of Jerusalem, the rebuilding of the Temple and city walls, and the remarkable narrative of Esther. His scholarship reflects the critical and historical approaches that transformed biblical studies during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries while remaining accessible to the serious general reader. Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther occupy a unique place within biblical history, documenting the survival, renewal and identity of the Jewish people following the Babylonian Exile. Davies provides valuable insights into the historical context, literary structure and theological significance of these books, making this volume both a useful reference work and an important witness to the development of modern biblical scholarship. This volume benefits from distinguished ecclesiastical provenance, having formed part of the personal library of Reverend Dr David Monkton (1932-2025), whose ownership inscription and Ex Libris bookplate are present. Dr Monkton devoted more than half a century to Christian ministry and theological scholarship, serving as a Methodist minister and later as a Supernumerary Presbyter within the Nottingham and Derby Methodist District. He was also active as a police chaplain and contributed to public discussion of faith through published articles and commentary. The book therefore comes from the collection of a lifelong clergyman, preacher and scholar whose vocation was dedicated to the study, interpretation and communication of Scripture. Such provenance is particularly fitting for a substantial biblical commentary and provides a tangible connection to a lifetime of theological study and ministry. The presence of Dr Monkton's ownership inscription and bookplate significantly enhances the historical interest and appeal of the volume. An attractive and increasingly desirable example of early twentieth-century biblical scholarship and a worthy addition to collections of theology, biblical studies, church history, Hebrew studies and ecclesiastical provenance. Provenance From the library of Reverend Dr David Monkton (1932-2025), Methodist minister, theologian, police chaplain and Supernumerary Presbyter, with ownership inscription and Ex Libris bookplate.…
