In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. SUTHERLAND T. HASSELL J. etc from drawings by HEATH W. (illustrator). 1st Edition. A historical & commemorative account of British military campaigns & victories during the late French Revolutionary & Napoleonic Wars. A spectacular copy, very fresh and bright, with FIFTY FOUR hand coloured aquatints, including the Portrait of the Duke of Wellington Near Fine, First edition, [1814], large quarto, engraved title with an uncoloured vignette, fifty-four hand-coloured aquatint plates, including frontispiece (described as vignette title), dedication leaf, portrait of the Duke of Wellington (not present in most copies) and fifty-one views of military scenes and battles, on India paper, by T. Sutherland, J. Hassell, and others, from drawings by W. Heath. Tissue guards. Plates & text leaves watermarked 'J. Whatman 1812'. Large paper edition, bound with the Contents leaf and the list of subscribers at end. Contemporary full navy blue straight-grain morocco, covers decoratively panelled in gilt and blind, spine decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, board edges and turn-ins tooled in gilt, all edges gilt, green watered silk end leaves decoratively tooled in gilt, flyleaves very lightly foxed, with crisp impressions of these finely engraved, vibrantly coloured plates. (338*268 mm). (Prideaux p341. Tooley 281). In a discussion of colour plate books on Wellington and Waterloo (a literature in themselves), Prideaux distinguishes this volume and Jenkins's 1817 companion volume, Naval Achievements of Great Britain and Her Allies, as worthy of their theme; nor could one desire a finer record of heroic deeds.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good +. WHITCOMBE T. SUTHERLAND T. BARTLETT W. (illustrator). 1st Edition. A work documenting British naval victories & maritime exploits, spanning the French Revolutionary Wars, the Napoleonic Wars, & related conflicts. First edition, early issue, 55 hand coloured plates & 1 B&W. In 20 century half calf over blue cloth, some gilt tooling, corners brushed. Spine, raised bands, decorative gilt tooling & titles. Internally, frontis, engraved title with un-coloured vignette, not dated but 1817 or later, not paginated [approx 148 pp], 55 fine, hand coloured aquatint plates by T Sutherland and others after T Whitcombe, plus one un-coloured plate containing two etchings showing battle plans for the Bombardment of Algiers an the Battle of Trafalgar, plates generally clean and bright, Gibraltar plate with a few small spots in image, Capture of La Loire and Capture of La Forte plates with marginal repairs, without the portraits of Nelson and Lord St. Vincent, as often -'the work is complete without them' (Tooley), 'Collectors should note that evidence of early state in this book can be found in the title page vignette, originally issued un-coloured, and coloured only in later issues' - (Abbey), top edge gilt, remainder uncut, small binders stamp to verso fep. (Tall Folio 357*286 mm). (Bobins 360. Abbey 337. Tooley 322). 'As a record of naval events spanning a period of over 20 years Jenkins' Naval Achievements has no precedent. At no time prior to 1817 had a publisher attempted such a complete volume of documentary naval prints. It is the quality of the accuracy which makes Jenkins so valuable above all' (Roger Quarm, National Maritime Museum).
