Contents 1 Introduction 2 Material and methods 3 Collection localities 4 Systematic list of fishes 5 Systematic account Summary References Scientific common and vernacular names   From the introduction River Pennar is one of the major rivers of South India and the third major river in Andhra Pradesh after Godavari and Krishna There is no published work on the fish fauna of this river system except the following works of general nature in which it is mentioned in distribution generally as Peninsular India or Southern India or Madras Presidency Day 1875-1878 1889 Jayaram 1981 1982 1999 Jerdon 1849 Hamilton 1822 Menon 1999 Misra 1959-1969 1976a 1976b and Venkateswarlu 1984 and 1986 Keeping this in view the study of fish fauna of this river system was undertaken and four extensive tours were carried out by Shri T Venkateswarlu and party from 1983 to 1986 Altogether 85 species belonging to 16 families and 7 orders have been reported here All the specimens were registered and deposited in Southern Regional Centre Zoological Survey of India Chennai The most valuable record is the report of Neotropius Khavalchor Kulkarni It is a monotypic species and is the first record after its original description by Kulkarni in 1952 Venkateswarlu and Indra 1993 The study of the ichthyofauna of Pennar river is of significane since not much is known about the fishes draining the Southern Eastern Ghats  52 pp.

Indira Parthasarathy, pseudonym of Padma Shri (Dr) Ranganathan Parthasarathy (b.1930), is a creative writer, literary and cultural critic and historian who started his career as an academic. Widely acknowledged as one of those who have revolutionized modern Tamil drama, he has so far authored nine full-length plays and seven one-act plays. The best known of these are Mazhai, translated here as Rain, Pasi, translated here as Comforting Illusions, Aurangzeb, a historical play, which won a Tamil Nadu Government Award, Nandan Kathai, a subversive retelling of a Tamil legend about a Dalit saint, and Raamaanujar (1996), a play about the great Vaishnavite saint, which was awarded the K.K. Birla Foundation's Saraswati Samman in 1999. Besides his dramatic output, Indira Parthasarathy has also published sixteen novels, six anthologies of short stories, four anthologies of short novels and a volume of critical essays. He was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi award for his novel Kuruthi-p-punal, which has been translated into all the major Indian languages, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2004. He is the only Tamil writer to have been honoured with both the awards. He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award last year at The Hindu Literature for Life event. (jacket).

"Published in 1978 in Tamil, The Legend of Nandan is a superbly contemporary drama about a seventh-century hero in a clash between high-caste Hindus and the suppressed people of a typical Tamil village. "Nandan, a bonded labourer, is deeply discontended with his servile existence, and yearns for a better way of life for himself and his people. His artistic appreciation of the dancing Lord Nataraja of Chidambaram temple leads him to seek and receive a darshan of the deity. The upper-caste Hindus begin to feel threatened by the rise of Nandan, and enlist the help of the learned Vedic Brahmin, who misuses Nandan s piety and deceives him into submitting himself to a fire-bath in front of the Lord, so that he may emerge purified .
