He recounts his voyage north to Alaska from Esquimault, the departure of Stefansson and others to search for fresh meat when the ship was trapped by ice, the drift in Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, the sinking of the Karluk, the sledge journey to Wrangell Island, and the eventual rescue of the survivors. The first edition, printed in November 1916, is easier to find. - With a dedication in ink by the captain and co-author Robert A. Bertlett to Edwin Denby (1870 - 1929): "To the Honourable Edwin Denby, the Secretary of the Navy. A real man, a true friend, [.] R.A. Bartlett. Washington, D.C. March 6th 1924." -- Edwin Edward Denby was born in Evansville, Indiana, on February 18, 1870. He was appointed Secretary of the Navy in 1921 and was later persuaded by Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall to transfer the oil rights, which were under the control of the Navy, to the Department of the Interior. Fall later sold the rights to his friends, which drew public attention to the Teapot Dome scandal. Denby still held a cabinet position in 1924 but fell out of favor due to the scandal and returned to Michigan to work as a lawyer. He died there on February 8, 1929. -- This work, written by Captain Robert A. Bartlett and Ralph T. Hale, is an impressive non-fiction account of the Canadian Arctic Expedition (1913-1916). It describes how the flagship Karluk becomes trapped in the polar ice, is crushed, and sinks, after which the crew must wage a fierce battle for survival on the ice and Wrangel Island. In the summer of 1913, the Karluk departs under the command of explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson to explore the northern waters and wildlife. The ship soon becomes enclosed by dense ice and drifts aimlessly in the Beaufort Sea for months. In January 1914, the ship is finally crushed by ice masses and sinks to the bottom. Expedition leader Stefansson abandons the stranded ship prematurely with a small group to go his own way, leaving the captain and the rest of the crew to their fate. Captain Robert Bartlett takes command of the remaining passengers (scientists, crew members, and Inuit families). The group attempts to survive on the cold ice plains for months and eventually reaches the uninhabited Wrangel Island. To get help, Captain Bartlett, together with an Inuit companion, undertakes a heroic and perilous trek of over a thousand kilometers across the frozen sea ice and the Siberian coast. Thanks to this arduous journey, a rescue mission can be organized, although nearly half of the original 25 passengers do not survive the ill-fated ship.…
