This is particularly true of the Mughal school located at the court of the Great Mughal rulers. The founder of this dynasty was the Ferghanese amir Zahir ad-Din Babur, whose descendants extended their authority over a large area of India. Dehli was made the capital of this empire. The Mughal school, emerging in the second half of the XVIth century, although founded on Indian artistic traditions, was directly influenced by Iranian and Central Asian miniature painting. An acquaintance with European art, the specimens of which appeared in large quantity in India beginning with the XVIth century, also played an important role. A striving towards an exact and detailed depiction of events, especially those connected with the court life of the Great Mughals and their vassals, is characteristic of the masters of this school. True to life portraiture and painstaking representation of all, even the least important, details was emphasized. Until relatively recent times, comparatively less research was devoted to the artistic schools developing in the small princedoms located in northern Punjab and the Himalayan Hills. These schools flowered during the XVIIIth century, a time when the small feudal states in the remoter mountain regions became stronger as a result of the disintegration of the Mughal empire and actually independent. In comparison with the Mughal school, painting in the mountain states, ruled by rajas, was more closely bound to local Indian traditions. This is reflected both in the choice of themes and in stylistic features. The mythology of Hinduism and ancient and medieval Indian poetry provided subject matter for the majority of the miniatures.
