Zustand: Good. The format is approximately 11 inches by 5.5 inches with bottom folded and 7 inches unfolded so that there are 8 panels, four on each side. Illustrations. Tabular Data [train schedules]. References. This is a fascinating snapshot in time regarding urban/New York transportation at the middle of the Twentieth Century. The schedule takes up relatively little space and there are numerous advertisements for banks, contractors, automobile sales, limousine services, rental cars, real estate, wine and liquor, restaurants and Inns, and even a Broadway play [The Miracle Worker with Ann Bancroft and Patricia Neal]! From the webpage of the National Association of Timetable Collectors: As small railways grew into systems and long distance travel became more customary, the need for a timetable to display more information soon exhausted the limitations of a single sheet of paper. To facilitate this distribution and the presentation of timetables from various companies in an organized fashion, printers settled on a standard dimension of four inches wide by nine inches tall for most timetables intended for the public. First in the form of folded large sheets and later in the form of a double folded, stapled booklet, these timetables presented the offerings of the various railways to the public. Many were highly ornate and reflected the very latest in printing technology of their era. When the airlines began commercial operations in 1927, they followed along a similar path. If you are fascinated by timetables - the paper that brings man into coordinated contact with the machines of transportation - then you will benefit from becoming a member of the National Association of Timetable Collectors. Serving as a forum for collectors all across North America and the world since 1962, the NAOTC promotes the enjoyable collecting of timetables. Whether collected as historical records of transport services in a particular area, of an individual company's activities, or simply as fine examples of the printer's art, you will find that timetables become more informative and enjoyable with membership in the NAOTC. Our members' interests range through a wide variety of bus, air, rail employee, rail public and marine timetables of all dates. Members gather at our annual convention, as well as at local shows held at various locations throughout North America. They keep advised of current activities through the FIRST EDITION, our monthly newsletter. They also receive our quarterly magazine, the TIMETABLE COLLECTOR, which features articles on timetables from the past and present. Zustand: Good. - An original 11 inch high by 7-1/2 inch wide gravure by E.C. Meinecke & Co. of New York on 15 inch high by 12 inch wide buff stock. The sienna toned image is a caricature of Chauncey Depew seated on a dock at Peekskill Landing, fishing pole in hand and a string of fish at his side. Shaded by a Chinese straw hat with his feet dangling from the dock, Depew is attired in a white button down shirt and capri-like pants. The menu's title "Lotos Club To Our Chauncey." is illustrated with the image of Depew's mansion and a banner of a winged locomotive pulling a train above. Depew's fishing pole, with its line dipping into the lily pad pond at bottom left, diagonally crosses the menu's selection, while a train exiting a tunnel is depicted at bottom right. The menu, engraved along the bottom left quarter of the image, includes such offerings as Blue Points, Chicken consomme a la Royal, Timbales a la Depew, Kennebec Salmon, Asparagus a la Peekskill, etc. The artist's name is engraved at the bottom right of the image. We can only make out the artist's initials "G.S." due to damage to a portion of the name. The gravure is boldly signed "Chauncey M. Depew" in pencil across the top. Mounted with glue from the verso onto a slightly larger cardboard mat there is a tear along the right edge of the print's border with some minor chipping and three holes along the left edge. There is minor foxing with a small spot of dampstaining to the top of the right border. The top edge of the heavier mat on which the print is mounted is chipped. Good. RARE. Provenance: From the estate of American impresario and Medal of Honor recipient Major James B. Pond. The Lotos Club, with its literary and artistic bent hosted frequent "State Dinners" for which it produced elaborate souvenir menus. At this dinner held in New York on February 22, 1896, Chauncey Depew delivered a speech on the occasion of Washington's and Lincoln's Birthdays: ". Lincoln attained from the log cabin of the poor white in the wilderness the same position which George Washington reached from his grand old mansion and palatial surroundings on the Potomac. Widely as they are separated, these two heroes of the two great crises of our national life stand together in representing the solvent powers of the inspiring processes and the hopeful opportunities of American liberty. The one coming from the top to the Presidency and the other from the bottom to the Presidency of the United States, the leadership of the people, the building up of government and the reconstruction of states, they grandly illustrate the fact that under our institutions there is neither place nor time for the socialists or the anarchist, but there is a place and always a time, notwithstanding the discouragements of origin or of youth, for grit, pluck, ambition, honesty and brains".The attorney for Cornelius Vanderbilt's railroad interests and president of the New York Central Railroad System, Chauncey Depew (1834-1928) served as U.S. Senator from New York from 1899 to 1911. After graduating from Yale, Depew was admitted to the bar in 1858 and first practiced law in Peekskill, NY. Moving to New York City, Depew first became the attorney for the New York and Harlem Railroad and subsequently for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad before he became the attorney and director of Vanderbilt's whole system. Depew served as president and served on the board of several railroad companies as well as of other businesses.

Excellent. Size 59.5 x 45.5 Inches. This is Joan Charysyn's own copy of her 1974 station map of the New York City Commuter Rail network, designed during her tenure under Massimo Vignelli at Vignelli Associates and Unimark International. Similar to the famous 'Vignelli Map' of the New York City Subway, which Charysyn also helped design, this work exemplifies 'beauty in simplicity.' A Closer Look Covering the New York City Metropolitan or Tri-State Area, this map includes seven rail services managed by or in partnership with the Metropolitan Transit Authority, including the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH), and Staten Island Rapid Transit (now Staten Island Railway, which for mapping purposes is included with the New York City subway nowadays), and the predecessors to today's Metro-North Railroad and New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit). Several features on the map were recent creations, including the 'new' Penn Station, Amtrak, and the World Trade Center, which only opened the previous year. Like the Vignelli New York City Subway map on which it is modeled, this map achieves the near-impossible in presenting the most essential information to commuters, making sense of a jumble of dozens of stations, seven commuter rail systems (most with multiple branches and both express and local service), plus connections to interurban service with Amtrak, ferry and bus connections, and alternate bus services. Charysyn erred on the side of simplicity wherever possible, too much so for some people's tastes. No mention is made of schedules, fares, express versus local services, connections with the subway or buses, or other information that might be deemed essential to travelers (though phone numbers are provided for the various services and, in theory, timetables and fare information would be available at the station). The LIRR appears as a uniform blue, with no visual distinction between its various branches, and geography is distorted for the sake of expediency (for instance, the Mineola, Hempstead, and West Hempstead stations are, in reality, in an almost-perfect north-south alignment rather than offset as here). Most egregious of all, to some at least, is the shrinkage of Manhattan, the destination of most commuters , to a comically diminutive size (an inversion of its inflation on the Vignelli subway map), and its blocky, cartoonish appearance, as is also the case with Long Island and Staten Island. In defense against these fulminations, one might point out that such information is utterly unnecessary for daily commuters regularly taking the same route. Despite its utilitarian benefits, in the years since this map's creation, the MTA's official maps have deviated from its design principles, though some occasional 'schematics' put out by it and partners (such as the Port Authority) are highly similar in style to the map seen here. What Makes a Map a Map? This work and the earlier Vignelli/Charysyn subway map expand our understanding of what a map is or could be. Rather than attempt to 'realistically' represent one of the densest population centers on the planet to scale with 'proper' distances between stations and all or even most of the potential information a commuter might need, it instead operates like a narrowly focused but easy-to-use infographic, getting the commuter from their origin station to their destination station; the commuter is left to their own devices for everything happening before and after that point, which in most cases is perfectly sufficient (especially for regular commuters, not tourists). At the same time, it retains the rough 'shape' of the rail networks and the geography of the Tri-State area, still resembling a 'typical' map for familiarity's sake. The Piecemeal Assemblage of the MTA This map was produced at a time when mass transit in New York City was in a state of crisis and flux. Railroad companies were falling into insolvency one after another. In order to maintain passenger ser.
