In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Good. Sylvester Harding (illustrator). Robert Dodsley's anonymous illustrated work 'The Oeconomy of Human Life', offering a series of moral lessons in the guise of an eastern philsopher. First thus, the first edition with these illustrations. 'The Oeconomy of Human Life' is written as if by an eastern philosopher, giving moral lessons to the reader. This work was first published anonymously in 1751, with it's authorship quickly being falsely attributed to the Earl of Chesterfield. This led to the book being a great success, and running through many editions and translations within the century. Written by Robert Dodsley, though his name does not appear on the title page of this work. Dodsley was a bookseller and publisher, publishing many of Samuel Johnson's works, helping him to finance his 'Dictionary'. He was briefly imprisioned for publishing Paul Whitehead's satirical poem 'Manners'. Dodsley also wrote 'Servitude: a Poem written by a Footman', 'A Muse in Livery, or the Footman's Miscellany', 'The Toy-Shop', and 'King and the Miller of Mansfield'. With illustrations throughout by Harding. Three pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper, 'Frances Matilda Lie.'. In the original full straight grain morocco binding. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Spine is cracking a little, with a little rubbing to the head and the tail, resulting in a very little loss. Minor bumping to the extremities. Light marking to the boards. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper, 'Frances Matilda Lie.'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have a touch of age-toning, with some spotting. Head of the title page has been repaired with an additional leaf adhered. The odd pencil marks to pages. Good. book.

Sylvester Harding was a miniaturist, engraver and publisher who was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme and sent as a boy to be an apprentice hairdresser to London. At the age of fourteen, he ran away and joined a troupe of strolling players but by the 1770s, he had become a successful miniature painter, with paintings regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1777. He published a number of works in collaboration with his son, an engraver, and his brother, Edward, a librarian. The brothers set up successful bookshops and publishing businesses first in Fleet Street and then in Pall Mall, where the first volume of the present work was published. At some point between 1795 and 1798, the brothers separated their businesses and Sylvester stayed at the Pall Mall address, where he was to issue the second and third volumes. Other important works by Harding were his Illustrations from Shakespeare, 1789-1793 and his Memoirs of the Count de Grammont, 1793. The text for the biographies was supplied by Francis Godolphin Waldron, actor, actor manager, bookseller and writer.first.
