This is a collection of 49 short essays and studies on many subjects, but largely with a religoius bias. They were not originally intended for publication, but were collected in bo…ok form by the author at the request of his friends. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with a white cloth spine and gold on brown titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with heavyish bumping to the spine ends and some dents on the spine. The contents are tight and clean with a prevous owner's name and date (1923), together with a signed inscription from the author on the front free endpaper. The inscription reads: "With all kindly greetings. Sydney Walton." A signed letter from the author to Clarence Hitchen of M.C. Hichen & Sons, Drapers of Leeds, has been tipped in on the front fixed endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with soiling and the edges are rubbed with some creasing along the top edge. The spine ends and corners are bumped and nicked with small pieces missing. The edges have some tears of up to about 3/4" and some of these have been repaired on the reverse with tape. The spine is faded and a name (Mr. Hitchen) has been written on the front of the wrapper. Signed & Inscribed with a Lett.

Moule writes that he is 'quite prepared to receive and of course to attend to any communication from Mr. Sydney Walton', but that he must 'distinctly decline responsibility in detail [last three words underlin…ed] for the work of the Bible Crusade'. He 'willingly expressed' his 'cordial personal sympathy with its aims when its founder [i.e. Walton] wrote' to him, but has 'just discovered to my surprise that I am being advertised in consequence as "the Leader of a new Campaign"'. He is 'about in a friendly spirit to protest [to Walton] against this unauthorized use of a very busy man's name'. Within a few years of the writing of this letter Walton would be, as his entry in 'Who Was Who' states, 'at Ministry of Munitions, then at Ministry of Food; on Lord Rhondda's personal staff, and later principal Private Secretary to Food Controller; Director of Publicity for Victory Loan in 1919'. Letter One: He hopes he will not 'appear wanting in courtesy to yourself or to the Editor of the Morning Post if I say frankly that I had much rather not have any conversation abo…ut my coming birthday, which certain old Harrow pupils and friends propose so kindly to celebrate.' He 'must beg' Walton to 'make allowance for my feeling of reserve on so delicate a matter'. Letter Two: He repeats his refusal, adding: 'I have more than once declined proposals from distinguished Publishers to publish incidents of my life, and I must adopt the same course with regard to oral communications however kindly suggested. I greatly prefer to remain unrecorded.' Walton is not named, the letters being both addressed to 'My dear Sir', but the two items are from his papers. He begins: 'Dear Sir. | I admire the enthusiasm which from the depths of an Office bearing the historically-ominous title of "Ministry of Food", & lodged in a once ducal mansion, can dictate (in type) so spirited…a letter as your's [sic] of the 27th. ult. I wish I could believe in your vision of Three hundred Boys shouting Come - to an (almost) Septuagenarian Lecturer. It is of course all nonsense. I have been a boy myself, & never should come to my Lecturer [sic] though my applause when the self satisfied Idiot sat down may have encouraged him to believe that he had given me pleasure - & so he had - when he sat down. Never should we delude ourselves - but though we can seldom by lecturing to them make any impression upon boys - but boredom - (unless we are funny & have slides), they, as you suggest, may make an impression upon us & it would be very pleasant to sustain such an impression, were I up to it. But unfortunately I am not yet quite strong enough - so have no choice but to say "NO.".

They are closely typed with single spacing, and both centre around Walton's employment situation and his complaints about the sending over from America of 'Mr. Russell', about whose 'absolute worthlessness to the business' he… complains. Adair's letter: 2pp., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The firm has 'not the slightest doubt' that what Walton has said in his 'confidential communication' is 'entirely sincere': 'We feel it is just such a letter as a really big man, having the interest of his employers at heart, would right. [sic]' They have complete confidence in Russell's 'integrity, honesty, etc.', but acknowledge that it is important 'that he expenses of the London Office be kept down to the last notch'. Russell is 'familiar with so many things that have been done in this country, and the manner in whcih either successes or failures have been made out of them', and is 'rather expert in figuring out the cheapest way to do things [.] A great many firms go to pieces not because they have not made money, but for the reason that they failed to save any of that made'. Wright's letter: 3pp., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with slight damage (not affecting the legibility of the text) to the third of its three leaves. He has delayed replying to Walton's letter as he 'wanted to take sufficient time to think over our London situation more carefully and to definitely make up my own mind as to what would be for the best interests of the business'. He is not surprised that 'Mr. Starmer' has made Walton 'a liberal offer': 'there are plenty of other newspaper men in England who would not be slow to recognise your ability and to make you a satisfactory proposition'. Walton is highly qualified 'to handle the large and successful papers'. Wright lays out the plans he has for Walton: 'I have away down deep in my heart a great degree of interest in yourself and I have taken up the matter of your future with my associates with the idea in mind that at the proper time you will be given a connection with the company in a way that will be highly satisfactory to you; in fact, I would not be at all surprised if an opportunity of absolute control of the English company would be given you'. In the meantime Walton's salary of £750 will be continued, and he will be assisted by a 'traveling man'. '[Y]ou have been with our company going on two years. You have seen evidenced in Sheffield and one or two other towns what our plan of operation is worth and at such time as the war is over and things settle down to calm conditions you will in my opinion be able to produce results over there that will be highly gratifying to everybody interested.' He considers that England is not 'in nearly as serious a condition' as America: 'in fact I believe that business has been affected as much if not more in certain lines in the United States than it has in England'. On the question of Russell's 'absolute worthlessness to the business, it would seem that backed up with a college education, coupled with what he has learned in knocking about this country for fifteen or twenty years, that he ought to be able in time and under the proper tuition of one more capable to at least earn a respectable part of his salary.'.
