General Currie's appointment was made in the field, by his British military superiors. This action was not well received by some Canadian authorities, civil and military, both in the United Kingdom and in Canada, who had concerned themselves with matters other than military experience and proved capacity for command and leadership. Despite this fact, the arrangement for the command of the Canadian Corps and the consequent change in the 1st Canadian Division were eventually recognized. Nevertheless, until the end of the war and even after, the clash with these Canadian political personalities and others of their persuasion continued, eventually culminating in the vicious state-ment published on 13 June, 1927, in a local Ontario newspaper, the Port Hope Guide.
