The Lutheran minister Carl Aaron Swensson thanks the American impressario and lecture manager Major James B. Pond for books he's given to the colleg…e library "Many thanks for the Lord's Books for the Library." "Also thanks for the Sir Edwin Arnold books. Valuable in themselves, they become more so by your inscription." He advises Major Pond that "The 20th Anniversary was a great big thing. I wish you could have seen & heard us". Signed by Carl Swensson with his abbreviated signature. Major Pond has faintly stamped "Book" at the top left of the first page. Folded for mailing, else near fine. The American Lutheran minister Carl Aaron Swensson (1857-1904) was the founder and President of Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. Dr. Swensson served in the Kansas House of Representatives from 1889-1890 and as secretary of the General Council of the Lutheran Church of North America in 1885 and subsequently as its president from 1893-1894. He was a delegate to the 1896 Republican Convention and president of the Kansas Teachers' Association from 1889 to 1890. King Oscar II of Sweden awarded him with the order of the "Knights of the North Star" in 1901. Dr. Swensson served roles during the 1893 World Columbian Exhibition and was a member of the Building Committee for Sweden's Building at the St. Louis Exposition on 1904. He died of pneumonia at the age of 46. RARE.
