Soft cover. Zustand: As New. 1st Edition. A 4 signature from 'Visual Design in Action' published by Hastings House in New York, 1961. Here 4 pages with examples for the image design for 'Carrs Self Service Department Store' New Jersey (1956-57). This brochure with several texts, among which: "creating a store personality"? Sutnar, 1956-57 [for Katz/Waisman/Blumenkranz/Stein/Weber, Architects Associated] To make shopping easier and also more exciting, "Carr's" self-service department stores wished to establish a store atmosphere expressing unity of design with utility and beauty.? The original program called for an extensive study of the visual means that would create an effective prototype environment. The design had to support the store's approach to merchandising. It also had to provide a disciplined visual framework which would be interesting and rapidly understandable with relation to the overwhelming variety of goods on sale. To achieve this, several systems of design controls were set up to provide a distinguishing identity for everything from store signs to shirt labels. These included coordinated layouts, alphabets and colors on the variety of information forms required. Further, a group of symbols was introduced to facilitate recognition of the various departments. The findings of this study were applied when the store was built. Examples of bags and boxes are illustrated here, with the store identifying design in primary colors. Other problems involved in the execution of the preliminary study are shown on the following visual unit.

unterschiedl. Künstler u. Gebrauchsgraphiker. Halbpergamentbd. mit eingbd. Orig.-Broschur. Original-Ausgabe. - Hervorragend erhaltenes Exemplar. 500 gr.

Erstausgabe
First edition, first issue. 305x215mm. Unpaginated. Cream cloth decorated simply in red. Original black and white illustrated dust jacket protected by plastic cover. Some slight rubbing and chipping to the edges of the dust jacket but overall the binding and jacket are in excellent condition. Extensively illustrated throughout in black and white and colour design demonstrating the principles set out by Sutnar in his text. Accompanying the book is a collection of four A4 size original advertising and marketing leaflets showing Sutnar's work. Two are original examples of marketing material and are reproduced in the book; one is an advertisement for Sutnar's book "Catalogue Design Progress" and one is a simple folded card advertising Sweet's Catalog Service for which Sutnar worked. All are excellent examples of Sutnar's work. This is a very nice copy of an important and scarce book of twentieth century modernist design. Ladislav Sutnar was one of the great figures of twentieth century design. Czechoslovakia was a major centre of modernist architecture, design and typography and this book captures much of the spirit and aesthetic of the movement. One can trace Sutnar's influences, including Bauhaus and the De Stijl movement with its emphasis on geometric orthography and primary colours. In 1939, Sutnar settled in New York and became art director of F.W. Dodge's Sweet's Catalog Service. He appears to have absorbed elements of advertising and pop art (although he professed to dislike pop culture) and became a master of commercial print design in the flagrantly capitalist America of the 1950s.
SUTNAR, Ladislav. Package Design: The Force of Visual Selling. Unpaginated, illustrated with hundreds of photographs. Oblong 4to, 228 x 305 mm., bound in publisher's boards and illustrated dust jacket. New York: Arts Inc., 1953. Sutnar's classic work on advertising. Sutnar, a native of Czechoslovakia, became one of the twentieth century's most influential designers. In America he produced three beautifully designed and highly influential books: Design for Point of Sale (1952), Package Design (1953), and Visual Design in Action (1961), all of which are difficult to find in good condition.
