The Vaikunthanatha or Lakshmana temple is one of the earliest, best preserved and most typical of evolved and finest monument stands in the centre of a large cluster of ancient temples, Wester group of temples of Khajuraho, variously known as Ramachandra of Chaturbhuja of Chandella dynasty. This is the only temple which preserves all the principal elements of Sandhara Prasada of the Panchayatana variety, namely Mukhamandapa, Mandapa, Maha-mandapa with transepts, Antarala and Garbhagriha with an inner Pradakshinapatha and the four subsidiary shrines are placed at the four corners on the jagati or the platform terrace. Its mature plan and design, grand dimensions and symmetrical proportions, superb sculptural embellishment and architectural elaboration, marks the most evolved and finished achievements of the central Indian building style and one of the sublime creations of Indian architecture. Hardcover. Zustand: New. The Virupaksha temple complex is situated on the southern bank of Tungabhadra River at Hampi, in Hospet taluk, Bellary district in northern Karnataka. This temple was founded in pre-Vijayanagara times and a place of worship under the Vijayanagara rulers and continues to play an active role in the religious life of the people and indeed the whole of South India. This temple complex has been continuously expanded and altered through the centuries and it difficult to give a straightforward chronological history of this temple. This is a living worship temple right from its foundation. The Virupaksha temple consists of a garbhagriha, an antarala, anti-chamber, sabhamandapa or navaranga and mahamandapa. The whole temple complex is surrounded by a prakara with pillared cloisters, entrances and small shrines in addition to pillared mandapa. The garbhagriha is square and enshrines Siva Linga, which is being worshiped since its foundation and the God Virupaksha was the tutelary deity of the Vijayanagara rulers. The ancient Vatapi, now known as Badami, in Bagalkot district (formerly Bijapur) of Karnataka, was the capital city of first Imperial Western Chalukyas of Badami, swayed whole of South India from 6th to 8th centuries A.D.
