Among the ports and harbours of the west coast of India, Goa occupies a strategic position whilst relatively good harbours have made it a centre of maritime trade for much of its history. Goa was one of the most important entrepots on the west coast of India. Maritime interaction of Goa with the rest of the India as well other parts of the world is well documented from the early centuries of the Christian era. Over the centuries, ports of Goa declined owing to siltation, foreign attack, then new ports were established and maritime trade continued. The location of Goa suited the Portuguese from every angle so they fought against Adil Shah and conquered and ruled Goa up to 1961. During these periods several ships have been wrecked in Goa waters either due to naval warfare, unskilled navigation or other reasons. In order to reconstruct the maritime history of Goa both onshore and offshore explorations have been carried out and the present work is the outcome of the exploration. Moreover, it was for this reason that the first shipwreck exploration in Indian waters was carried out in Goa waters. In course of underwater exploration, shipwrecks have been found off Sunchi Reef, St Georges' Reef and Amee Shoals, Sail Rock and Grande Island. The Sunchi Reef shipwreck is the oldest wreck so far surveyed in Indian waters and the first Portuguese wreck until now investigated. Coastal Geomorphology and Seabed topography of Goa has been recorded while undertaking shipwreck studies. In addition to shipwrecks, stone anchors have been documented in Goa waters and Chandor, Gopakapatana and Old Goa, the port sites of Goa have been explored. In separate chapters, a comprehensive report of analysis of elephant tusks and hippopotamus teeth recovered from Sunchi Reef shipwreck and the anatomical analysis of wooden stocks of iron anchors retrieved from Aguada bay have been included. The book gives a comprehensive account of the rich maritime heritage of Goa and illustrated with both inland and underwater photographs, drawings and tables, and undoubtedly it will fascinate, enhance the knowledge of scholars and researchers and provide them with an insight into the maritime heritage of Goa.

The book incorporates archaeological findings both from land and under water explorations carried out a Bet Dwarka by the Marine Archaeology Centre of the National Institute of Oceanography Goa. Bet Dwaraka is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Okhamandal region of Gujarat as it has preserved the longest cultural sequence commencing from protohistoric period to modern times. The time bracket of archaeological remains have been well supported by the scientific dates such as Carbon AMS and thermoluminescence. Other important scientific aspects discussed in the book are analysis of bones palynological studies impact of seismic activities and sea level changes of the study area. The book begins with an introduction to the geological geographic archaeological and environmental background of the region and then devotes a chapter to chronology dealing with cultural and scientific dates from the site. Planning and layout of trenches and cultural findings and identification of layers have been described in a separate chapter. A full chapter has been devoted to antiquities discovered during the excavation which includes beads of terracotta shell glass stone and fish bone copper objects coins shell bangles and iron objects. Another chapter comprises of the detailed description of the pottery of the protohistoric and historical period. The concluding chapter deals with the shell remains from the island of Bet Dwarka. It is hoped that the book will help in understanding the maritime activities of the Okhamandal region and the cultural sequence of the Bet Dwarka island. Dwarka has always evoked keen interest among scholars and researchers because of its links with the Mahabharata which mentions sea level changes much before the concept was developed and accepted in oceanography/marine geology. It was therefore naturally the first site to be taken up for marine archaeological exploration in India. The sea off Dwarka has been explored since 1982 for marine archeological purpose and the findings have attracted the attention of media and the common man. Archaeological findings such as a large number and variety of stone anchors suggest that Dwarka was a very busy port during the historical and the medieval periods. The present book details the scientific analysis of systematic explorations carried out between 1998 and 2002. The archaeological findings from Dwarka have been compared with the findings from various sites along the Saurashtra coast to provide relative information. The type of the antiquities recovered from the sea bed is indicative of the involvement of ancient man in maritime activities. This book discusses extensively the date and identification of anchors and other objects recovered from underwater exploration. The book also addresses some of the controversies that arose during early stage of the exploration based on additional facts and findings collected. Divided into two major sections devoted to Dwarka and Somnath respectively the book is profusely illustrated with underwater and surface photographs drawings and tables.
