Like other post Soviet Central Asian Republics Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have had different priorities of reform. There have been varied attitudes to reform. On the one hand there is an appraisal of early achievements in the realm of politics and economy. On the other hand there is a tendency to highlight internal contradictions like ethnic divergence and clan difference. The inabilities of the authorities to control internal fragmentation in these two republics have also been studied by scholars. The aspect of social transformation is reflected in people's reactions to reform. There are indications that the people of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan were sensitized to a whole range of issues like ethnic social distance education media migration and diasporas social security environment etc. The present study tries to shed the myopic view of Central Asia's limitations and takes into consideration the factors that have shaped state society relations. The themes of study are diversity and divergence and their representations in Central Asia. The purpose is to highlight the metamorphosis of Kyrgyz and Kazakh societies that otherwise seem to be riddled by contradictions like tribal and clan divisions ethnic tension regional disparities urban rural differences social inequalities etc. The permissive environment in these two republics has also been studied. The study analyzes the debatable issue of ethnicity and the feeling of cooperation in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan that cuts across ethnic categories. There is also an attempt to study Xinjiang as a Central Asian borderland and the cultural space that it shares with the Kazakhs Kyrgyz and the Mongols. The generations of closeness between Xinjiang's non Han population and their ethnic brethren in Central Asia have also been taken into account. By and large, there have been two major viewpoints, one which emphasises the aspect of 'failed states' and the other that focuses on technology as the prime instigator and motivator for the protests. Even as the Arab Uprisings are commonly acknowledged as an upshot of a succession of protests as well as the "colour revolutions" across Eurasia and West Asia, the after effects have been incessant with the Maidan in Ukraine and intermittent protests in Turkey. The causative factors have been as diverse as climate change and its adverse impact, economic inequalities fed by a process of globalisation which caters to certain sections of society, social grievances of marginalised sections who feel politically, socially or culturally deprived and a general failure to address critical issues in an apt way. While the nature of the protests has been as varied as the reaction of authorities to the protest, there has been a tendency to review the replication of the protests across states in the region. The world today is increasingly observing and partaking in local and global acts of protest and solidarity that entail visual, aural, and behavioural articulations by demonstrators as effective ways of making claims, reclaiming spaces, and condemning invasive situations. The volume analyses relations between the state and such protests by exploring the construction of protest movements, and probing the background, nature and specificity of dissent. Protest movements and counter-movements have been examined and analysed. The demonstrations in support of an expanded European Union, the ouster of President Yanukovich and the release of the Opposition leader Yulia Timoshenko initially seemed to have international mandate. The issue of territorial sovereignty of Crimea following Russian military intervention raised alarm in global circles. The referendum about Crimea`s acquiescence to Russia was considered to be questionable. For some Crimean Tatars, a renewed Russian presence in Crimea was a grim reminder of Soviet collectivization and deportation. In the immediate aftermath of the Maidan demonstrations, Soviet memories were revived and post-Soviet contradictions unfolded. Gradually however, the West`s expose of Russia`s intentions in eastern Ukraine tended to be overbearing. Quite clearly, larger issues were at stake. The diversities and heterogeneities instead of the specifics, the encounters, the networks, the challenges, the ways of living, the multitude of fates need to be considered, and this is what contemporary debate on cosmopolitanism is all about. The images are of the many and not of the one and only one. So, The picture is far bigger as there are infinite ways of being and belonging. The images are of the many, and as suggested here, relate to the Kazakh conscience. The Kazakh conscience represents a repertoire of diverse opinions regarding Eurasianism, intellectuals' reformist agenda, zhuz legacy, people's histories. What stands out is the wider milieu of a cosmopolitan Almaty which is the home of a cultural elite or a citified Astana that has been showcased as the "appropriate site" of the Kazakhs' steppe identity. The variety is also seen in the case of Uyghur neighbourhoods of Almaty, in the frontiers of Akmolinsk oblast reminiscent of Tsarist Russia's Cossack military fortresses, in gulag memorials near Akmolinsk/Tselinograd/Astana and in the Caspian hub Atyrau that is iconised as the oil fountain of the present century. Kazakh borderlands have a completely different profile-that of shared spaces. The Kazakhs' attachment to their homeland is a constant-but the question is whether that territorial reality fits into other paradigms of identity and belonging.
