Superb contemporary half-leather cloth with gilt-print on the spine. Small stamp on title-page, edges bumped, otherwise good condition.

37 x 24 cm, folio, Contemporary blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, retaining both original clasps. A sound and appealing contemporary binding with only minor old repairs, light wear, and a few insignificant old wormholes. Title in red and black, (6), 636, (36), title in red and black, (6), 734, (34) pages, double-column Latin text throughout. Paper browned and toned throughout; edges of leaves, particularly at beginning and end of volume, significantly damaged by moisture, leaving paper fragile and friable in these sections; some leaves with green mould staining along fore-edges and lower margins; front paste-down and flyleaf (water)-stained and partially detached. Red library stamp visible on title page. Still a sound and impressive copy of a substantial theological folio, see pictures. Francisco Suárez (15481617), Spanish Jesuit theologian and philosopher, known as 'Doctor Eximius'. This work on the virtue and state of religious life is dedicated to Henricus Scerenus, Provincial of the Rhenish Province of the Society of Jesus. Published at Cologne by Hermann Mylius Birckmann, 1609-1610; imprint includes the Jesuit IHS device on title page. 3916g.
