Lorsque Philippe d'Orleans devient, a la fin de 1715, regent de France, il est convaincu de l'"utilite des sciences" et resolu a encourager la restauration economique du royaume. Il prend l'initiative d'une grande enquete nationale pour faire l'inventaire des ressources naturelles de la France. Cette enquete est realisee sur le terrain par les intendants, mais sa direction scientifique est confiee a l'Academie royale des sciences et tout particulierement a Reaumur.
