A controversial novel, this was awarded the prestigious Whitbread Prize, but the award was revoked when on judge complained of its treatment of incest. Basis for the 1999 film of the same name which was Tim Roth's directoral debut (and for which Stuart wrote the screenplay) and which one reviewer called the best movie of 1999, praising it for its incredible daring and its brutal but honest portrayal of the subject of sexual abuse and incest. Like the movie, this book is perhaps too honest to be "commercially sucessful" but it is a well-written book about an often unrecognized but devasting "war zone" - that is, inside a seemingly happy family. 210 pp. Near fine in glossy illustrated wrappers (usual light toning to the pages.).

Chase Spent His Early Political Career Supporting "A Wide Range Of Reform Causes: The Single Tax, Women's Suffrage, Birth Control And Socialism." Chase's Early Books, The Tragedy Of Waste (1925) And Your Money's Worth (1927), Were Notable For Their Criticism Of Corporate Advertising And Their Advocacy Of Consumer Protection. In 1929 Chase Co-Founded Consumers' Research, A Consumer Protection Advocacy Organization. Binding is solid, sturdy, tight, square. Interior faintly age toned, but still quite clean and crisp, albeit with a natural odor of old books to it, nothing offensive. Jacket is intact with some darkening, particularly at the spine, which is still legible. A few dot stains on spine and some other stray spots of dust soiling. A bit of waviness to one part of the DJ towards the top, perhaps some moisture exposure but no evidence elsewhere. DJ now in brodart.
