Near contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards, spine with gilt-lettered red morocco label, marbled endpapers. 24 black & white plates, numerous maps (some full-page), vignettes, and tables in the text. Some light marginal toning, generally a very good copy. Remarkably rare in commerce, Rare Book Hub records only just 2 copies from 1947 and 1966. Josef Rudolph Thomas Strzygowski (1862 1941) was a Polish-Austrian art historian known for his theories promoting influences from the art of the Near East on European art, for example that of Early Christian Armenian architecture on the early Medieval architecture of Europe, outlined in his book, Die Baukunst der Armenier und Europa. He is considered a member of the Vienna School of Art History.
