Peter Struycken designed an iconic (and still-circulating) Dutch postage stamp in 1980, which bears a computer-generated image of Queen Beatrix composed of hundreds of tiny, randomly colored dots. In explaining his choice, Struycken says, 'My use of dots in the representation of the portrait is related to my drawings and prints in which the dot is the smallest representation of color, and in itself, yields the least association with form.' A computer-design pioneer well known for his large-scale public projects, Struycken is one of the Netherlands' most innovative artists. In 1993, he was commissioned to design the arcade lighting for Jo Coenen's Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam and the tile and color scheme for Carel Weeber's 'De Struyck' student apartments in the Hague. This publication is the most comprehensive Struycken overview to date. It features illustrations of more than 80 of his most significant projects from 1955 to the present. Ter ere van Struyckens tachtigste verjaardag werd het Hedge House, ontworpen door architect Wiel Arets, getransformeerd tot een totaalkunstwerk. Struycken beschilderde vloeren, muren en plafonds met geometrische patronen in rood, zwart en wit, waardoor de architectonische ruimte een nieuwe, dynamische ervaring kreeg. Deze ingreep benadrukte de interactie tussen kleur, vorm en ruimte. In het Koetshuis werd een overzicht gepresenteerd van Struyckens kleurruimten, waaronder jacquard geweven gordijnen die de eetkamer omringden. De tentoonstelling toonde zijn evolutie van vroege computerwerken, zoals LINE (1977) en VARA (1989), tot recente dynamische lichtinstallaties die kleurveranderingen in ruimte en tijd onderzoeken. Peter Struycken is sinds 1968 actief als kunstenaar en staat bekend om zijn gebruik van algoritmes en computerprogramma's om kleurcomposities te genereren. Zijn werk varieert van schilderijen en tekeningen tot bewegend beeld en toepassingen in architectuur en theater. Een bekend voorbeeld is de postzegel van koningin Beatrix uit 1981, opgebouwd uit talloze puntjes van gelijke afmeting. Struyckens benadering is geworteld in geometrische abstractie en systematiek, waarbij hij de relatie tussen kleuren en hun plaatsing in ruimte en tijd onderzoekt.
