DNA and other scientific evidence indicate that mankind reached the brink of extinction seventy-five thousand years ago. If mankind again reaches near extinction, it likely would be the result of biological warfare or a natural cataclysmic event, rather than via nuclear or chemical warfare. The pandemics of the Black Death of 1347, the Spanish flu of 1918, and the coronavirus, are not known to be of biological warfare origin. This play was initially written before the current pandemic, and represents the hypothetical result of massive biological warfare. Coronavirus shows the massive impact one single everyday virus can have on worldwide civilization. A play that has a multi-racial cast featuring characters of different racial heritages, which might be the natural result of a Great Pandemic, and my visits to Tristan da Cunha, where racial diversity is the result of naturally occurring events, have solidified my desire to write such a play. The Burrow combines these two themes. Four survivors of the Great Pandemic, all seeking a safe haven in a world of desolation and lawlessness, come together in the confines of a barn, a burrow, which provides a place of shelter, safety, sustenance and survival, and a focus of fertility. They are joined eventually by two others, fleeing a dying community. This ethnically diverse group consists of: -A writer, well-educated, yearning for home and security.-A survivalist, well-educated, resourceful, streetwise, dreamer, visionary, yet practical.-A vagabond, streetwise, uneducated, resourceful, earthy, yearning for a mate, with a strong desire for nurturing. -A revolutionary, self-sufficient, idealistic.-Two young 'warrior women', with long range sharpshooting and rapid-fire skills. They have their own individual goals, roles, and desires, and coexist with feelings of isolation, hopelessness, and helplessness. When threatened from outside, they come together to confront the dangers. As their inevitable launching into the outside world approaches, they prepare to leave as a team with common goals and plans. The underlying goodness of man slowly emerges, and the characters are filled with joy, hope, love and humor.

Five years passed from the beginning of the plague, and four particular humans eventually found each other and bonded together to survive: A wild young woman surviving almost as a wild animal. She feels like a feral animal, wanting her own nest. She flees the dangers of the south, only to find danger as she travels north. A former teacher and aspiring writer. All she wants is a home and a family, and to write about the history of the plague. She sails south from her island home only to encounter a ravished and hostile environment, and nearly perishes. A man of many talents, formerly radio operator and navigator on a ship and trained in the growing of food under various conditions. His skills are valuable in an emerging new world. His main desire is to raise food to support himself and others. A revolutionary living by his wits and always on the edge of danger. Initially he seeks a guerilla group to help fight the invading enemy. However, he soon finds such a group no longer exists and leads this small group in defending themselves. This group is joined by two others, who have survived the plague and whose skills complement those of the other four. They find a place of shelter, safety, sustenance and survival, and a focus of fertility. They have their own individual goals, roles, and desires, and coexist with feelings of isolation, hopelessness, and helplessness. When threatened from outside, they come together to confront the dangers. As their inevitable launching into the outside world approaches, they prepare to leave as a team with common goals and plans, and with joy, hope, love and humor. They sail away, seeking a land of plenty, a safe haven, to pursue a utopian existence, to form a new world in an old land, they call Cascadia.

Jed and Martha live at the end of the 14th century in Roslin, the home of Prince Henry Sinclair, one of the last Templars and possessor of the Cathar and Templar treasures. Descendants of the Merovingians, they all flee Scotland and sail across the seas to New Scotland, a new life, new friends, and many dangers. Sarah, Jeb and Magda, Jed and Martha, and Jes and Marya live in different eras and places, but they share the same legacy: they possess the Birthmark, a white circle with a red cross within. Each of them protects and passes on the scrolls, proof of the progression of the bloodline flowing through ages. And each is fleeing from a similar danger. Their destinies and the scrolls they guard, are interwoven over time and place. The future of the bloodline and the evidence of its continued existence are in their hands - and those of their descendants.

A play that has a multi-racial cast featuring characters of different racial heritages, which might be the natural result of a Great Pandemic, and my visits to Tristan da Cunha, where racial diversity is the result of naturally occurring events, have solidified my desire to write such a play.
