'This book offers an edition [In Judaeo-Arabic Hebrew Letters] and translation [English] of Dawud ibn Marwan al-Muqammis's hitherto unpublished 'Ishrun Maqala, the earliest extant work of Jewish philosophy in Arabic and one of the earliest extant Kalam works.' (From the Introduction) 'Al-Muqammas's pioneering work is of importance not only for the history of Jewish philosophy but also for the study of the emergence of the thought of Kalam theology in the Islamicate in general. Much of what we know about this period in Islamic thought is derived from later testimony, such as in heresiographies and doxologies, rather than from primary sources, many of which have not survived. Twenty Chapters follows the typical order of a Kalam treatise: epistemology, world, God, humanity and revelation, and a refutation of other religions, and is "in the present state of research, the earliest extant Arabic work-be it Jewish, Christian, or Muslim-in which this structure is attested" (xxxii). In addition, al-Muqammas was said to have lived as a Christian at one time and to have studied with Christian masters; indeed, his works provide unmediated evidence of the Christian impact on early Kalam.'.…
