Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine. Garnett, R.A.; Austen, John; Gibbings, Robert; Papé, Frank C.; Odle, Alan; Garwood, Tirzah; Hilder, Rowland; Kermode, William; Grant, Duncan; Moon, P.V.; Leighton, Clare; Wolfe, Edward (illustrator). Each volume one of 550 copies, quarto size, approx. 650 total pages, each volume signed by the author. The "Furnival Books" were a series of shorter works from young authors, some of whom would go on to be considered the best of their day. The brainchild of bookseller and publisher A. W. Steele, he published these limited edition copies under two imprints, but the entire series of twelve books were all printed by the Chiswick Press between 1930 and 1932. One of the great bonuses of this series are the frontispiece illustrations, several by some of my own favourite artists: John Austen, Robert Gibbings, Frank Papé, and Clare Leighton. Particulars on the twelve books are as follows: (1) Powys, T.F.; Warner, Sylvia Townsend (Foreword); Garnett, R.A. (Woodcut), "The Key of the Field", 1930, no. 12, 39 pp.; (2) Bates, H.E.; Garnett, Edward (Foreword); Austen, John (Line Engraving), "The Hessian Prisoner:, 1930, no. 477, 42 pp.; (3) Coppard, A.E.; Gibbings, Robert (Woodcut), "The Man From Kilsheelan", 1930, no. 180, 38 pp.; (4) Davies, Rhys; O'Flaherty, Liam (Foreword); Papé, Frank C. (Illustration), "The Stars, The World, and The Women",1930, no. 135, 53 pp.; (5) Hanley, James; Aldington, Richard (Foreword); Odle, Alan (Frontispiece), "The Last Voyage", 1931, no. 232, 73 pp.; (6) Strong, L.A.G.; Coppard, A.E. (Foreword); Garwood, Tirzah (Frontispiece), "The Big Man", 1931, no. 267, 45 pp.; (7) Manhood, H.A.; Williamson, Henry (Foreword); Hilder, Rowland (Frontispiece), "Little Peter the Great", 1931, no. 368, 95 pp.; (8) Warner, Sylvia Townsend; Powys, T.F. (Foreword); Kermode, William (Frontispiece), "A Moral Ending" (also containing "A Parting Gift" and "How to Succeed in Life"), 1931, no. 468, 47 pp.; (9) Garnett, David; Bates, H.E. (Foreword); Grant, Duncan (Frontis), "A Terrible Day", 1932, no. 148, 37 pp.; (10) O'Flaherty, Liam; Davies, Rhys (Foreword); Moon, P.V. (Frontis), "The Wild Swan" (also containing "It Was the Devil's Work" and "Unclean"), 1932, no. 121, 60 pp.; (11) Benson, Stella; West, Geoffrey (Foreword); Leighton, Clare (Frontis), "Christmas Formula" (also containing "Tchotl" and "A Dream"), 1932, no. 419, 67 pp.; [and] (12) Collier, John; Sitwell, Osbert (Foreword); Wolfe, Edward (Frontis), "Green Thoughts", 1932, no. 45, 56 pp. ___DESCRIPTION: The volumes all of a uniform design, with each bound in a different colour of cloth, each with the title in gilt on both the front board and the spine, the author in gilt towards the bottom of the front board, year of publication in gilt at the tail of the spine, top edges gilt, the limitation pages found before the half-titles each signed by the author, each volume with a frontispiece by different artists; binding quarto size (10 1/8" by 6 3/8"), pagination as set forth above. ___CONDITION: The set near fine overall, the boards on most volumes clean (vol. 2 with a thin line on the back board which appears to be some sort of residue, vol. 9 with small spot of soil on the front board, and vol. 12 with what appears to be offsetting from the glue), the corners on most volumes straight and unrubbed but a few volumes lightly bumped and with minimal rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors clean and bright, and the set entirely free of prior owner markings; several volumes with sunning to the boards and most volumes with the spines sunned. Still overall a lovely set, a few condition issues to the bindings, the interiors fine, we noted several signatures unopened. ___POSTAGE: Please note that the combined size and weight of this set will necessitate additional postage, please inquire for details; International customers, also please note that any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Zustand: Fine. - Original vellum document, consisting of 2 attached sheets with scalloped top edges. An indenture 24 inches high by 30 inches wide and the assigns 22 inches high by 30 inches wide, as usual folded down to 9 inches by 10-1/2 inches. 84 lines of text handsomely calligraphed over the two sheets. Within the initial "T" is the British emblem encircled by the words: "Honi soit qui mal y pense", a motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter which translated means "Shamed be whoever thinks ill of it". The document has 2 George III embossed revenue stamps with a metal band, one for three pounds and the other for one pound. There are also 2 Royal Cyphers. On the rear fold of the document is a sketch of property showing several divisions including "Embleton Street 12 yards wide Dr Solomons land & Cottage". Upper Stanhope Street ("20 yards wide") is on the south and Hayton Street ("6 yards wide") is on the north. To the west of Solomon's land is land of Bland and another party. Further to the west is a 12 yard plot of land sold to Rowland Owen and "Release dated 23rd & 24th December 1818". This parcel appears to have the signature of Sefton over its description. Another entry on the indenture dated August 11th & 12th 1820 conveys property to Robert Rawlinson and Thomas [ Hesketh? ] by the trustees of the will of Samuel Solomon. The conveyance is signed by two of Solomon's sons, Abraham, an oculist in Birmingham, and John, an amateur boxer and non-practicing lawyer. It is also signed by Ebenezer Daniell, the manager of Solomon's Cordial Balm firm. Further, in 1828 there is notice of "59 yards including half of Hayton Street" being conveyed to James Watts of Toxteth Park. It was later conveyed to a [M J Hicks ?] in October 1832. Both of these later conveyances are accompanied by minimal sketches. The document is signed by the Earl of Sefton, a party of the first part, Peter Still and Alexander Strong of Lincoln's Inn, parties of the second part, Joseph Dawson of Liverpool party of the third part, John Henderson of Toxteth party of the fourth part, John Clare of Liverpool party of the fifth part. The lessees are described as "Samuel Solomon of Gilead House near Liverpool, Doctor of Physic" and his Trustees "John Bird of Liverpool aforesaid Architect" and "Thomas Murrow of Liverpool".In addition to the June 16 indenture there are 3 others:1) A 15 inch high by 24 inch wide indenture on parchment dated June 15 1818 and titled "The Earl of Sefton to Doctor Solomon & Trustee / Lease for a year". The trustee is identified as John Bird of Liverpool, Architect and it is signed by Sefton.2) A 16 inch high by 23-1/2 inch wide indenture on parchment dated June 15 1818 and titled "The Earl of Sefton to Doctor Solomon & Trustee / Lease for a year". The trustee is identified as John Bird of Liverpool, Architect and it is signed by Sefton.3) A 17 inch high by 23 inch wide indenture on parchment dated August 17, 1818 and titled "Peter Brown to Dr. Solomon and Trustee / Lease for a year". The trustee is identified as John Bird of Liverpool, Architect and it is signed by Peter Brown. The indentures are folded down to approximately 8-1/4 by 6 inches. Each of these 3 indentures on parchment has a George III embossed revenue stamp of one pound fifteen shillings, a royal cypher, the stamp of James Walker of Bermondsey, parchment dealer and the British emblem within the initial "t" encircled by the words: "Honi soit qui mal y pense".The 3 indentures by the Earl of Sefton are of particular interest for this reason - parliamentary elections were being held from June 17 to July 18, 1818 and, being an Irish peer, Sefton was eligible to run for a seat. Dr. Solomon, who by this time had become quite wealthy, was the chief organizer of the Earl's campaign. Solomon spared no expense on his behalf in Liverpool which was famous for lively electioneering. It was to no avail as Sefton lost his election to George Canning. It seems quite possible that these leases, given their dates within 2 days of the campaign, served as a kind of reward for Solomon's future efforts."Doctor" Samuel Solomon (c. 1768 - May 21, 1819) was born in Cork and moved to Dublin, influenced by his uncle Isaac Solomon who worked as a druggist there. Around 1789 he and his uncle went into business in Liverpool's dockland area. In 1796 he began marketing his "Cordial Balm of Gilead" which he claimed would cure one of ulcers of the lung, kidneys and liver, sexual dysfunction, hypochondria, female complaints etc. His claim to have been a Doctor of Medicine is suspect. Solomon became very wealthy from the sales of his expensive tincture made from a mixture of brandy and turpentine flavored with herbs as well as from real estate investments.

Comb binding. Zustand: Very good. [6], 160 pages. Decorative cover. Index. Diary of 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945. Tabular Data. Appendix covers Pilots, Navigators, Bombardiers, Radar Observers, Ground Officers, Master Sergeants, and Aircraft. There is a Key to Abbreviations. Residue inside the front cover. Russell A Strong served as a navigator with the 306th Bomb Group. He flew in Milton Adam's crew. He also was in Intelligence and Public information for six weeks at Thurleigh [13 Sept 1944 to 1 Nov 1944]. He completed his missions on 26 November 1944. R.A. Strong, became the founder and long-time secretary of the 306th Bomb Group Association and attended the official opening of the American Air Museum at Duxford. This is the second volume in a series of four being issued by the 306th Bomb Group Association to provide its membership with more detailed information about the activities of the four combat squadrons of the 306th Bomb Group. The four diaries were prepared between 1942 and 1945 by the several intelligence officers assigned to the squadrons. In this volume five men actually did the writing at various times. These diaries deal in large measure with the combat phase of squadron life, but include other aspects of events at Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, England, the home of the 306th Bombardment Group from early September 1942 and continuing until after the end of hostilities as the 306th and 305th Groups were charged with the aerial mapping of Europe and North Africa. Appended are lists that have been compiled in more recent years. These lists previously appeared in 306th Echoes, and have been edited and enhanced. The squadron was first activated as the 367th Bombardment Squadron in the spring of 1942, one of the original four squadrons assigned to the 306th Bombardment Group. After training with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses, the squadron moved overseas and participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Germany, earning two Distinguished Unit Citations for its efforts. After the war the 367th remained in Europe with the occupation forces until inactivating in 1946. In April, 1942 its personnel moved to Wendover Field, Utah, where it began training with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers. On 1 August 1942, the squadron's ground echelon began its deployment, spending a week at Richmond Army Air Base, Virginia before moving to Fort Dix, New Jersey at the Port of Embarkation. It sailed on the RMS Queen Elizabeth on 30 August, arriving in Scotland on 5 September 1942. The air echelon departed for Westover Field, Massachusetts, and began ferrying their B-17s to England via the North Atlantic ferrying route. The squadron settled into its combat station, RAF Thurleigh, England, in early September. Although several bomber units arrived in England before the 367th, when these units left England to participate in Operation Torch it became, along with its companion squadrons of the 306th Group, the oldest bombardment squadrons of VIII Bomber Command. It few its first combat mission on 9 October 1942 against a steel factory near Lille, France. This was the first mission on which VIII Bomber Command assembled a strike force of over 100 bombers. The squadron operated primarily against strategic targets, including the locomotive factory at Lille, marshalling yards at Rouen, France, and Stuttgart, Germany. The squadron took part in the first strike into Germany by bombers of Eighth Air Force on 27 January 1943 when it struck U-boat yards at Wilhelmshaven. It struck shipbuilding yards at Vegesack, ball bearing plants at Schweinfurt, the aircraft factory at Leipzig, Germany, and similar facilities. On 11 January 1944, the squadron participated in an attack on an aircraft plant in central Germany, near Brunswick. Extensive cloud cover had resulted in the recall of two of the three bombardment divisions involved in the mission and made the rendezvous of the fighter groups scheduled to provide cover in the target area difficult. In contrast, clear weather to the east of the target permitted the Germans to assemble one of the largest fighter formations since October 1943, with 207 enemy fighters making contact with the strike force. For this mission, the squadron was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation (DUC). The following month the squadron earned a second DUC for its performance during Big Week, an intensive bombing campaign against the German aircraft industry. Despite adverse weather on 22 February that led supporting elements to abandon the mission the squadron and group effectively bombed the aircraft assembly plant at Bernburg, Germany. The squadron also performed in a tactical role, assisting ground forces Operation Cobra, the St Lo breakthrough, Operation Market Garden, the attempt to establish a bridgehead across the Rhine near Arnhem in the Netherlands, stopping German attacking forces in the Battle of the Bulge, and bombing enemy positions during Operation Varsity, the airborne assault across the Rhine in the spring of 1945. After V-E Day, the squadron became part of the occupation forces and participated in Project Casey Jones, the photographic mapping of portions of Europe and North Africa. The 306th Group began to phase out of the project in July. In February 1946, the squadron moved to Istres-Le Tubé Air Base, France, where it absorbed elements of the inactivating 92d and 384th Bombardment Groups, returning to Germany in July. The squadron was inactivated in December 1946. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.
