The publication from The Maryland Historical Society in 1868 provides the history of George Evelin, who arrived on Kent Island in the Chesapeake Bay in 1636. His uncle was already involved in a trading enterprise on the current Delaware River. Evelin joined the settlement of Captain Claiborne, which at that time was in conflict with the Maryland settlement of Lord Baltimore. While he initially supported Claiborne's community against Governor Calvert of Maryland, mistrust developed on Claiborne's part. Eventually, through power and treachery, Evelin wrested Kent Island from Claiborne. A very interesting early episode in the history of the State of Maryland. 8vo.
