Softcover/Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Josef Strau. Tears and New Tears. New York: Greene Naftali, 2018.Staple-bound softcover.35 pages. Very good.Minor creasing and edgewear to covers.Barbara Ess' copy with her Just Another Asshole stamp to title page.Scarce artists' book. This staple-bound, text-based publication accompanied Austrian-born, Brooklyn-based artist Josef Strau's 2018 exhibition of the same name. His fourth solo show at Greene Naftali Gallery, the exhibition presented a new group of paintings, drawings, and text posters, although none of these are featured in this booklet. Standing as an enigmatic confession-memoir on its own, Tears and New Tears traces Strau's autobiography and thoughts on contemporary art through highly eloquent and semi-sardonic automatic writing, linking together memories of his alleged dissipation into artmaking, penitent divulgences es of his inner mindscape, and discussions of Archangels. On the exhibition itself: "The new paintings, inspired by a trip to Mexico and Strau's interest in Byzantine iconography, are made of tin and soldering wire. Within deliberate erosions and incisions on the tin surfaces, Strau paints in a palette reminiscent of one of his childhood heroes, the Austrian-born artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Here, as in previous exhibitions, Strau pairs the tin-and-wire works with printed texts: automatic writing, infused with Strau's memories and autobiography, organized visually into concrete forms." Erstausgabe
Softcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 22 x 25 cm, 128 pages - Wolfgang Tillmans has been redefining photography and the way it is presented for over 20 years. From his seemingly casual images of people and objects in the early 1990s, reflecting the culture and identity politics of the time, to the deeper exploration of abstraction in his more recent work, pushing the boundaries and definitions of the photographic form. This catalogue, arranged and designed by Tillmans himself, brings together the whole range of his oeuvre in all its diversity: portrait, landscape, and still life photography alongside abstract and random pieces, colour-saturated works, and experiments with process, forming a kind of meta art work, with a rhythm and logic of its own. I try to approximate the way I see the world, not in a linear order but as a multitude of parallel experiences. Multiple singularities, simultaneously accessible as they share the same space or room . This selection of works, presented here in full colour, often on double-page spreads, includes many new pieces. The theoretical and historical context of Tillmans art are tackled in detailed essays by Michael Bracewell and Josef Strau and an interview with the artist by Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist provides a fascinating insight into his life and work.
