Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Folio 48 x 32 cm, 9 annuals in 7 vols. (all published), 130, 228, 250, 398, 504, 474, 324, 72, 134 pp. A weekly and sometimes biweekly magazine which showcased all the contemporary visual arts, film, music, and literature. with greatest emphasis on the Czechoslovak world but embracing the international scene in a spectacular newspaper format. It is most renowned with the covers of the fifth year by Adolf Hoffmeister, whose caricature portraits of avant-garde luminaries both Czech and abroad have reached greatest exposure and established as cultural icons of the day, but only in the post-communist era. It is now an historical fact that interwar Prague was the most open city of the era, possibly overtaking Paris and New York as a center of discourse and exchange of ideas artistic and political. This weekly magazine included reviews of important exhibitions, interviews with artists and authors, essays on all the artists and richly illustrated with drawings, graphics and photos: a document comprehensive in scope. The contributors over the course of Rozpravy's life read like the full gazetteer of important avant-garde figures in Western and Eastern Europe. Full sets of this journal are very rare, with most libraries holding only incomplete sets. The full set is massive, weighing in at 37 lbs before shipping. Annuals 1-6 in various bindings and overall very good, 7 through 9 are loose and darkened in the center page and good to very good.

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Jan Zrzavy (illustrator). 1st Edition. Octavo 21.5x14.5 cm., wrappers, 42(4) pp. Cover and frontispiece by Jan Zrzavý, book design by Vaclav Brünner. No. 297 of 500 copies. Otakar Storch-Marien (1897-1974) was a poet, publisher, and writer. He ran the publishing house Aventinum and edited a number of groundbreaking journals of new writing and art, collaborating with and commissioning works of the avant-garde during the interwar years of the First Czech Republic. His poetry aligns with Western European avant-garde currents of the day. The artist Jan Zrzavý (1890-1977) was a painter, graphic and book artist who was somewhat of a visionary and symbolist. His work runs parallel to and in confluence with the Poetism of the Dev?tsil group from the 1920s. He was honored as a National Artist in 1965. Here he provides a sensitive frontispiece portrait and cover vignette. Vratislav Brünner (1886-1928) was a famed graphic illustrator, book designer, painter, toy designer, and theater designer. The present work is a fine collaboration of the aforementioned parties. No institutional holdings found worldwide. Near fine.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Josef ?ima (illustrator). 1st Edition. Quarto 26.5x21 cm., wrappers in paper binding, 74 (1) pp. Book design by Václav Brunner, drawings by Josef ?íma. No. 308 of 600 copies. Otakar Storch-Marien (1897-1974) was a writer, poet, and the publisher of the Aventinum publishing house. He also founded the Kmen modern publishing club and bookstore, the central locus of Czech literary modernism in Prague. Josef ?ima (1891-1971) spent most of his mature years in France, but collaborated frequently with the Aventinum press in a series of important editions as illustrator during rhe interwar era. Venus with a Red Wig is a loose continuation of the book Lide z baru (People from the Bar), which ?íma also illustrated. For Venus, ?íma drew fourteen ink pen-and-ink drawings that, with their lightness and lyricism (in several drawings with an erotic accent), elevate the verses of the author. This copy signed by Storch-Marien. The original wrappers were extremely fragile and often missing. Here the front wrapper is preserved in a later paper cover. Signed by Author(s).
