Laid in is a beautifully penned letter from Thomas Denman presenting this book to a Mrs. Stannus (?): "I remember well how kind and helpful you always were when we met in those trying days of the War." On the half-title page there is another beautiful penned note from Denman, dated 9 Dec. 1930, explaining that at the end of the book "is a short account written by myself of the 2nd Line Regiment." Denman was a British aristocrat and politician who briefly commanded--as captain and then major--the Middlesex (Duke of Cambridge's Hussars) Imperial Yeomanry.
