The binding remains relatively tight and structurally sound, w…hich is highly commendable for a volume of this age, yet there is a loss to the cloth at the spine head and mild fraying at the tail. The boards show light scuffing, particularly to the blind-stamped rear board, and the corners are gently bumped and rubbed. The gilt tooling on the front board and spine remains remarkably bright and unoxidised, contrasting handsomely against the cloth. Internally, the text block is securely bound; the pages exhibit typical age-toning and occasional light foxing, most notably around the engraved frontispiece and title page, but are otherwise clean and supple. The inserted newspaper clippings are brittle but have caused only minimal offsetting. Overall, a respectable, complete survivor that firmly justifies its Good grade despite the exterior flaws. Catalogue Note: This is a scarce First Edition of Recollections of Old Liverpool. While the author is credited solely as "A Nonagenarian" on the beautifully engraved title page, the work is widely attributed to the noted local historian James Stonehouse. The book is charmingly illustrated with a detailed frontispiece view of Liverpool and a title page vignette depicting a traditional windmill. Originally serialised in the Liverpool Compass, these historical memoirs proved so popular that they were compiled into this standalone volume. Original printings in their primary cloth bindings are increasingly difficult to source on the open market, having largely been absorbed by local history archives or replaced by modern facsimiles.
