In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Photo album. Oblong quarto. Measuring approximately 13" x 9¼". Half leather and pebbled cloth over boards with all edges gilt, and spine and cover titled in gilt. Bookplate of newspaper publisher and founder of the *Chicago Daily News* Melville E. Stone by Friedrich Haffcke on the front pastedown.…Contains 43 cardstock leaves with 124 gelatin silver photographs laid down, measuring from approximately 2" x 3½ to approximately 10½" x 7½", about half of which contain brief inked captions. Boards with some rubbing and wear, leaves gently rippled, a few photographs with modest lightening at the edges or in a tiny bit of the image, overall very good or better. A handsome, likely professionally produced, tourist album for a turn-of-the-century trip to Scandinavia, the journey presumably taken by newspaper publisher Melville E. Stone and company. The images are roughly broken into three parts: over half consist of landscapes, architectural shots, group shots, and portraits, which tend to be the largest images; 18 photographs of classical sculpture, which tend to be mid-sized; and 33 photographs of gargoyle heads, all measuring approximately 2" x 3½". Highlights include handsome architectural shots and street views; images of classical sculpture (as well as the 33 folksy carved gargoyle heads); an image of the Christiana public market in full swing; and nicely composed scenes of nature. Perhaps of most note are the approximately 22 images of native Scandinavians dressed in what appear to be homemade fur clothes; several images featuring reindeer, dogs, and babies in homemade bassinets. Two native group portraits are taken around a house, each with someone sitting on the roof. Two group portraits of the travelers feature intruding reindeer. The images, nicely composed and often taken from the perfect distant vantage point, are likely professionally made; Stone likely chose the images he liked and, combined with several candid group shots of his co-travelers, created a very nice souvenir. A visually striking album featuring Scandinavian art, architecture, and people around the turn of the century.
