Revised edition, first thus, 2002. 11 1/4" x 8 3/4", xiv, 359 pages, more than 400 illustrations in colour and black and white. This is the ultimate backstage tour of Broadway! AT THIS THEATRE tells the complete history of Broadway in the 20th century, theatre by theatre. This gorgeous book is now updated, revised and with a larger format, covering 1900 to 2001. PLAYBILL's columnist, Louis Botto, along with Robert Viagas, opens the doors and lets readers explore the 40 active Broadway theatres in New York. From the conception and design of the buildings, to their original creators, and on to the theatres' transformation, often under duress, from legitimate houses to vaudeville and Burlesque, to movie houses and then back to their original purpose, this book captures the magical world of Broadway. It is a complete and authoritative history that only Botto, the curator of PLAYBILL's incomparable 116-year-old archives, can tell. Expanded from his popular column in PLAYBILL magazine, AT THIS THEATRE is the biography of those living, breathing buildings we call theatres. In this substantially updated version, Botto includes the histories of all the theatres rescued from the wrecker in the last ten years, including the American Airlines Theatre, Disney's New Amsterdam, and the Lyric and the Apollo, now combined into the Ford Center. AT THIS THEATRE is filled with great stories featuring a cast of characters including Ethel Merman, David Merrick, Katharine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and Spencer Tracy. And it's also a theatrical spectacle boasting lavish illustrations of posters, programs, and photographs throughout.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Louis Stokes was a giant in Ohio politics and one of the most significant figures in the U.S. Congress in recent times. When he arrived in the House of Representatives as a freshman in 1969, there were only six African Americans serving. By the time he retired thirty years later, he had chaired the House Special Committee on the Kennedy and King assassinations, the House Ethics Committee during Abscam, and the House Intelligence Committee during Iran-Contra; he was also a senior member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee.Prior to Louis Stokes's tenure in Congress he served for many years as a criminal defense lawyer and chairman of the Cleveland NAACP Legal Redress Committee. Among the Supreme Court Cases he argued, the Terry 'Stop and Frisk' case is regarded as one of the twenty-five most significant cases in the court's history. The Gentleman from Ohio chronicles this and other momentous events in the life and legacy of Ohio's first black representative-a man who, whether in law or politics, continually fought for the principles he believed in and helped lead the way for African Americans in the world of mainstream American politics.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. First edition. Multiple Special House Reports (91st Congress, 2d Session) bound in one volume. Thick octavo. Complete as issued in the original publisher's cloth. Some toning, near fine. Contains two important investigative reports by the Committee on Internal Security (i.e., the renamed House Un-American Activities Committee): *Anatomy of a Revolutionary Movement: "Students for a Democratic Society"* (No. 1565: vii, 175, xiii pp., with photographs); and *Report of Inquiry Concerning Speakers' Honoraria at Colleges and Universities* (No. 1732: xii, 52pp.). Both were conducted under the direction of Richard H. Ichord, the Committee's Chairman, a fervent anti-Communist who crusaded against the Peace Movement during the Vietnam War. The report on Students for a Democratic Society and associated New Left groups, includes an illustration of FBI Wanted Poster for William Charles "Bill" Ayers that was used by House Republicans to discredit President Barack Obama. The report on Speakers' Honoraria, undertaken to investigate the possibility that New Left radical groups and organizations were financing their activities through speaking engagements, includes the Dissenting View of African-American Congressman Louis Stokes of Ohio. Also included in this volume are three timely reports by the Select Committee on Crime on drug use and related criminal activities among urban and counterculture youth: *Juvenile Justice and Corrections* (No. 1806: v, 85pp.); *Amphetamines* (No. 1807: v, 44pp.); and *Heroin and Heroin Paraphernalia: Second Report by the Select Committee on Crime* (No. 1808: v, 83pp.). A nice copy, scarce in the trade.

[1856-1941]. Other People's Money and How the Bankers Use It. New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, [1914]. xiv, [2], 223 pp. Original cloth, gilt titles to front board and spine. Small stain to front board, light wear to spine ends and corners, majority of gilding rubbed away from spine title. Moderate toning to interior, gift inscription from Felix Frankfurter to front free endpaper. $1,950. * First edition, first issue. This scathing critique of "Our Financial Oligarchy" is based on a series of articles published in Harper's Weekly from 1913 to 1914. Frankfurter [1882-1965], a protege of Brandeis, inscribed this copy to one of his proteges, Francis Shea [1905-1989], who was one of his former Harvard Law students (LL.B., 1928). Shea became a prominent New Deal official and went on to a distinguished career as the dean of the University of Buffalo School of Law, which experienced a renaissance under his direction. Recruited by Robert H. Jackson, he was Roosevelt's Assistant Attorney General, heading the Claims (now Civil) Division. In 1945 he joined the staff of American lawyers that helped to design the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, then served on as a prosecutor at the trials. Returning to Washington after the war, he established what became a leading Washington law firm, Shea & Gardner. The inscription reads: "To Francis Shea/ With the cordial regards/ & good wishes of/ Felix Frankfurter.".
