Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. I have just listed an early "forestry" book published by the Orange Judd Company of New York; here is another presented in a very similar format. Please find: "Forest Planting- A Treatise on the Care of Timber Lands and the Restoration of Denuded Wood-Lands on Plains and Mountains" by H. Nicholas Jarchow. Apparently, this book is the result of a German forester, immigrant to the United States, writing or compiling the book based on his experience in Europe and reacting to the mandate of the New York State Legislature which in May of 1885, directed the members of the State Forest Commission "to prepare tracts or circulars of information giving plain and concise advice for the care of wood-lands upon private lands." While the Author does indeed offer sufficient and substantial information on "Forest Planting", he also advocates for the care and management of existing forests (correctly in my view, I should add). The book is illustrated and one finds a series of full-page illustrations drawn from similar publications in New York State, including several engravings of forest scenes by R.S. Stoddard (probably Seneca Ray Stoddard, a famous photographer and artist well-known for his views of the Adirondacks. Condition: This book is in very good condition, especially considering its age (1893- First Edition). The hard covers are generally clean, bright and barely bumped but there is a shelf sticker from the library which held it on the spine, the label a bit rubbed and worn. Inside, there is a sticker from a library, marked "Duplicate- Sold" and the right-hand page of this endpaper is cracked and loose but still present. The library has left an embossed cachet on the title page which also appears brittle and perhaps reglued. Inside the book I found another of those embossed library stamps and a crude card pocket on the rear endpaper. In general, however, the pages and illustrations are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. The binding is a bit shaken but nothing dramatic. R.S. Stoddard (for some full-page plates) (illustrator).…
