Summary:Starting in 1941 the Smithsonian published twenty-one illustrated booklets on the peoples, geography, history, natural history, and other features of the areas reached by World War II, particularly in and around the Pacific Ocean. The aim was to increase popular understanding of the regions and peoples involved in the conflict. Demand for the books were so great that in 1943 the print run had to be increased from 3,500 to 8,000. Zustand: fair. 2 volume hardcover set, in full green leather with gilt and blind-stamped decoration. Spine board is very rubbed and worn, chipped at crown and foot, but binding is tight and fully intact, on both volumes. Boards of both volumes are quite worn, particualrly edgeworn. Heavy bumping to board corners on both volumes, exposing cardboard. Prior owner's signature in ink in both volumes, multiple times in Vol 1. Short gift inscriptions in pencil, and bookplates of Henry Hamilton, illustrated with the Hamilton coat of arms, laid in on paste-down of each volume. Each volume is missing one illustration, and a tissue layer in Vol 1 has been torn out, and other illustrations have significant foxing or occasional staining. Text is foxed throughout with occasional staining, but still clear and readable. Marbled page block edges are worn and faded. Marbled endpapers in good condtiion, a little worn/browned. Ribbon bookmark missing from Vol 1. Overall, in a fair but well-loved condition.…

No dates on either the printed title pages or the engraved ones. 124 and 108 pages, with gilt page edges. The engravings, which are not numbered (120 of them) add to the bulk and heft of the set. Original green elaborately blind-stamped moire pattern cloth, elaborate gilt backstrips, decorated on upper covers with a gilt vignette of a supplicant before a Celtic cross in a derelict graveyard surrounded by a garland of shamrocks surmounted with "Cead Mille Phailte" and repeated on the lower covers in blind, all edges are gilded, pale yellow endpapers. Minute fray to the top of the upper joint of Vol. I otherwise a spectacular near fine original set collated complete with all plates and tissue guards in the correct placements, exceptionally clean plates. This set is variously dated by Librarians as 1840, 1841, 1842 and 1875, however this set is original in every respect and refers in the Virtue adverts to 'The Art Journal' for 1849 to 1854 inclusive and my other original set in five Parts with a similar binding has the Virtue adverts referring to 'The Art Journal' for 1857, thus I believe this set is correctly dated 1854.…

Condition: Part 1, near fine; Part 2, Tiny chips to head and tail of slightly faded backstrip otherwise near fine; Part 3, Tiny chips to head and tail of slightly faded backstrip otherwise near fine; Part 4, Tiny chips to head and tail of slightly faded backstrip otherwise near fine; Part 5, Tiny chips to head and tail of slightly faded backstrip, tiny hole in middle of upper joint, boards fading to brown otherwise VG+ with Virtue binders ticket on the rear pastedown. All five volumes are complete with all the tissue guards for the plates. There is foxing on many plates but only a few very foxed. The plates are exceptionally sharp and clear and because this set is as issued to be bound, it is thus full size with generous margins. Uncommon in the original five parts. First edition. Complete with all 118 full page engravings, two engraved titles with vignettes and an engraved map of Ireland. These sets are variously dated by Librarians as 1840, 1841, 1842 and 1875, however this set is original in every respect and refers in the Virtue adverts to 'The Art Journal' for 1857 and my other original set in two volumes with a similar binding has the Virtue adverts referring to 'The Art Journal' for 1849 to 1854 inclusive, thus I believe this set is more correctly dated 1854 and these five parts were made up by the publisher from the 1854 sheets with the adverts updated.…

Vol one has 53 of 54 and vol two has 67 of 67 engraved illust. On page 124 is a pencil signature with the name of N.P. Willis, one of the authors. Lovely engravings.…
