Modern architecture is another of his interests, ranging from the Neoclassical of the late eighteenth century to Postmodernism in the late twentieth. He was a winner of the Founders Award of the Society of Architectural Historians. His books include: English Painting: The Great Masters, 1730-1860; The Decorative Work of Robert Adam; and a two-volume study, English Neoclassical Architecture, which won the Gottschalk Prize for that year. Professor Stillman curated the exhibition Architecture and Ornament in Late 19th-Century America at the University Gallery, was Editor-in-Chief of the Buildings of the United States series from 1996 to 2004, and is working on a study of Neoclassical architecture in America during the Federal Period. The students in a seminar were responsible for the research and writing of the catalogue entries and the introduction. Each one also participated in the actual creation of the exhibition -- from the design of the announcement and the fabrication of some of the display units to the arrangement and hanging of the objects. It was decided for the exhibition that a fruitful topic would be American architecture in the last third of the nineteenth century. The committee felt that a crucial facet of this subject--the role of ornament--could best be explored through a exhibition combining architectural drawings, fragments and photographs. Conceived as an integral part of the over all program it became, as well, a demonstration in its on right of the attention that architects of the period lavished on decoration--from cornices to capitals and stair railings to doorplates. With historians and critics, as well as architects, once again interested in ornament and especially in that of the nineteenth century, this seemed an appropriate time to reexamine this material critically and objectively. …
