Como sistema gráfico, es uno de los más abstractos y no icónicos jamás concebidos para la comunicación humana. Las letras consisten en haces de uno a cinco trazos rectos paralelos idénticos, dispuestos en cuatro clases o grupos. El ogam se encuentra sobre todo en la superficie de objetos, normalmente piedras. En la actualidad existen algo menos de 500 piedras ogam, principalmente en Irlanda, pero también en Gales, Escocia, Inglaterra y la Isla de Man. A ellas hay que añadir unas dos docenas de objetos portátiles. Inventado tal vez en el siglo IV para escribir la lengua irlandesa primitiva, los siglos V-VII se consideran el periodo clásico de la escritura ogam.
