No former owner marks, Gustav Stickley…(March 9, 1858 ? April 15, 1942) was an American furniture manufacturer, design leader, publisher, and a leading voice in the American Arts and Crafts movement, and a major influence on American Craftsman architecture. The Craftsman magazine, first published in 1901, was an important vehicle for promoting the Arts and Crafts philosophy, and promoting products and design ideas as well as the products of Stickley's factory in articles, reviews, and advertisements related to home building patterns, furnishings and other home arts with photos, instruction diagrams and color plates. The magazine also served as a platform for challenging notions of the times, affecting the 'design' of society and culture. A final article in this issue is one of a 4 part series by Frederick Monsen: "The Destruction of Our Indians: What Civilization is doing to Extinguish Ancient and Highly Intelligent Race by Taking away its Arts, Industries and Religion.".
