Stewart first gained widespread visibility as a political correspondent for MTV News in the 1990s. She is the host of WNYC's midday show, All of It with Alison Stewart. In 1988 Stewart began her career as an assistant at MTV. In 1991, she joined MTV News as a segment producer when she was hired by MTV News Director Linda Corradina. She began reporting and producing during MTV's first "Choose or Lose" campaign, which covered the 1992 presidential race. Her role in MTV's campaign coverage earned her a Peabody Award. Stewart also contributed segments to other MTV News shows in the 1990s including Megadose (an alternative health program) and MTV News: Unfiltered. She also hosted specials including the Real World Reunion in 1995. Following the 1996 "Choose or Lose" campaign, Stewart left MTV and moved to CBS News in December 1996. She reported for several of the network's news programs, including CBS News Sunday Morning, 48 Hours, and Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel. In 2013, her book First Class, a history of Dunbar High School (Washington, D.C.), was published. It was named one of the best books of 2013 by Mother Jones and Essence magazines. Her second book, Junk: Digging Through America's Love Affair with Stuff, was published in April 2016.Stewart returned to PBS as a special correspondent in 2016. Dunbar High School in Washington, DC, defied the odds and, in the process, changed America. In the first half of the twentieth century, Dunbar was an academically elite public school, despite being racially segregated by law and existing at the mercy of racist congressmen who held the school's purse strings. These enormous challenges did not stop the local community from rallying for the cause of educating its children. Dunbar attracted an extraordinary faculty: one early principal was the first black graduate of Harvard, almost all the teachers had graduate degrees, and several earned Ph.D.s' all extraordinary achievements given the Jim Crow laws of the times. Over the school's first eighty years, these teachers developed generations of highly educated, high-achieving African Americans, ground breakers that included the first black member of a presidential cabinet, the first black graduate of the US Naval Academy, the first black army general, the creator of the modern blood bank, the first black state attorney general, the legal mastermind behind school desegregation, and hundreds of educators. By the 1950s, Dunbar High School was sending 80 percent of its students to college. Today, as with too many troubled urban public schools, the majority of Dunbar students struggle with reading and math. Journalist and author Alison Stewart, whose parents were both Dunbar graduates, tells the story of the school's rise, fall, and path toward resurgence as it looks to reopen its new, state-of-the-art campus in the fall of 2013. Since both of her parents were graduates of Dunbar High School and now have successful careers, the author took an interest in the subject. Stewart's parents felt dismay at how America's first black public high school let standards slip. But at the beginning of the 21st century, Dunbar, founded in 1870, seemed like yet another chaotic inner-city institution, with rowdy students the norm instead of the exception. Stewart is an able historian, and the saga of how blacks and influential whites managed to establish a school of the caliber of Dunbar in a strongly segregated society so soon after the Civil War is extraordinary and inspirational by any measure. Stewart offers a contemporary catalog of educational horrors. Stewart persuasively places significant blame on parents of contemporary Dunbar students for showing little or no involvement in the school activities of their children.
