His articulate explanations of music and the special challenges of horn playing and documented in 3 books and many articles, only a few of which are reprinted or excerpted in the third chapter of this book. The opening chapter is all Phil's; his recollection, successes, fears, and wit all combine to give a candid and entertaining look at how he feels he grew into what he became. Those who know Phil may recognize some of his stories, from the poker game in a disconnected railroad car to depositing Erich Leinsdorf at a draft induction center with a copy of Emanuel Kant's On Pure Reason and a Homburg hat. He doesn't include the story of the perfect concert in Boston with Reiner, but another contributor does.
