Stewart was born in Grafton, one of seven children of Stephen Sheldrick Smith, headmaster of Grafton Public School. Two of his brothers rose to prominence: Sir Grafton Elliott Smith, an Egyptologist, and Stephen Henry Smith, NSW Director of Education. Dr Smith in 1938 became the first director of post-graduate medicine at Sydney University, Chair of the Australian Rheumatism Council 1949-59, President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and a committee member of the National Heart Foundation.
