Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. With the increasing incidence of child abuse, emphasis is now being placed on strategies to enable prevention. Neglect is the most problematic form of abuse, because of the threshold of acceptability, issues related to culture, and effects of poverty. By its very nature, it is an ongoing problem and an area which is not clearly defined. It is clear that the extent of risk to children in relation to neglect needs to be evaluated and reviewed, to enable the appropriate response to be made within the available legislation. Definitions, assessment and interventions need to be viewed separately to enable neglect to be addressed and prevent further abuse. This volume supports the view that social workers need to be more proactive in their work in cases of neglect. It offers guidance and support to professionals who have to manage these situations. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Verlag: Riverside, Connecticut, Hillacre Bookhouse, 1911-1912., 1912

Five volumes, all first printings thus. All are in brown wrappers with a wallet closing flap that is an extension of the front wrapper, with a label on the front wrapper. In a slipcase of the same color with a thumb cut for extracting the booklets and a printed label on the spine "Hillacre Wallet Books / Box One / [list of the five titles]." Text and labels printed in black and red. The Wilde (1912), Carpenter (1912), and "In a Ruined Chapel" (1912) are all stated in the colophon to have been printed in an edition of 1000 copies. The colophons for "The Hunter" (1911) and the Stevenson title (1912) state that "A few copies . . . have been privately printed at Hillacre, Riverside, Connecticut." Although all are fresh, the label on the Stevenson title is chipped at the top left and bottom left edges, and there is a small hole in the label; printing is intact. In that title, the page edges were left rough and the half-title is particularly rough-edged. One could speculate that this was a "spoiled" copy that had to be used, given the small print run. The Carpenter title has a tear in the edge of the first page of text from having been grabbed. Other three titles are in fine condition. The list of the Hillacre Bookhouse, which was operated by Frederick Bursch, included work by John Reed, Lincoln Steffens, Hutchins Hapgood, and Arturo Giovannitti, and was tied to a progressive, socialist/anarchist sensibility.
