"THE twelve rolls and one book which are printed in this volume contain all that remains of the Register of the Great Seal of Scotland prior to 1424, the date of James I's release from captivity. They were printed in 1814 under the authority of the Royal Commissioners, in a folio volume, edited by Thomas Thomson. The "Domesday type" was employed, reproducing in conventional forms the contractions of the original MS. This edition deserves its high reputation; it is a marvel of accuracy, typographically and otherwise. In 1878 the publication in an abridged form and in octavo of the Great Seal Register from 1424 downwards was undertaken under the direction of the Deputy Clerk Register of Scotland; nine volumes have appeared, bringing the record down to 1659. The first of these was published in 1882, edited by Mr. J. Balfour Paul (now Sir J. B. Paul, Lyon King of Arms). The following is extracted from his preface:- "The folio published in 1814 will be reckoned the first volume of the work, and this the second. Hereafter the first might with advantage be reprinted in the same form as this and the volumes that are to follow, extending the contractions which so frequently embarrass the reader, and adding to it, as an Appendix, a revised edition of the index of missing charters published by Mr. William Robertson in 1798, so as to give as complete a view as is now possible of the contents of the Register from 1306 to 1424, as it stood about the beginning of the seventeenth century." The present volume carries out the project thus indicated with a little enlargement. The text is a reprint of the 1814 edition, revised from the MS. record, with contractions extended, use of capital letters modernized, and punctuation on a uniform system. The Appendices give what is known of the lost rolls.".
