Elizabeth Bacon Custer (née Bacon; April 8, 1842 - April 4, 1933) was an American author and public speaker who was the wife of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer, United States Army. She spent most of their twelve-year marriage in relative proximity to him despite his numerous military campaigns in the American Civil War and subsequent postings on the Great Plains as a commanding officer in the United States Cavalry. Left nearly destitute in the aftermath of her husband's death, she became an outspoken advocate for his legacy through her popular books and lectures. Largely as a result of her decades of campaigning on his behalf, General Custer's image as the gallant fallen hero amid the glory of Custer's Last Stand was a canon of American history for almost a century after his death, and endures in many quarters to this day. Elizabeth Custer never remarried and died in 1933, four days short of her 91st birthday. She was said to treasure a letter from President Theodore Roosevelt who stated that her husband was "one of my heroes" and "a shining light to all the youth of America." George Brinton McClellan (December 3, 1826 - October 29, 1885) was an American military officer and politician who served as the 24th governor of New Jersey and as Commanding General of the United States Army from November 1861 to March 1862. He was also an engineer, and was chief engineer and vice president of the Illinois Central Railroad, and later president of the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad in 1860. A West Point graduate, McClellan served with distinction during the Mexican-American War before leaving the United States Army to serve as a railway executive and engineer until the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861. Early in the conflict, McClellan was appointed to the rank of major general and played an important role in raising the Army of the Potomac, which served in the Eastern Theater. McClellan organized and led the Union Army in the Peninsula campaign in southeastern Virginia from March through July 1862. Custer got his first taste of war mere weeks after his graduation, at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861, where he gained the attention of General George McClellan. He soon joined McClellan's staff, and fought during the Peninsula Campaign that began in the spring of 1862. Custer earned a reputation for both bravery and brashness. In the summer of 1863, the 23-year-old Custer was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers, and took command of the Michigan Calvary Brigade. Maxim's first announcement of his invention of the automatic machine-gun using the energy from the recoil force to eject each spent cartridge and insert the next one, Maxim came up with the single-man operated machine-gun. Earlier types of machine-guns, as the Gatling and Gardner, consisted of multiple barrels and were powered by the manual turning of a crank, which made them very heavy and caused them to require several men in order to operate them. The invention of the Maxim-mechanism allowed for a single-barrel construction, and the new machine-gun could potentially be operated by just one man, which thus led to the modern automatic machine-gun.
