Umschlag berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - This is the first demographic survey in England of marriage and fertility of psychotics since the impact of community-orie…ntated psychiatry. Over 1,300 women suffering from schizophrenia or affective disorders were selected from 1955-63 admissions to a London hospital, and followed up until 1966. Their probability of marriage and fertility was compared with that of normal women as given by official statistics. The results showed that total fertility of schizophrenics remained low; their probability of marriage was three-quarters of normal before admission, and only one-third afterwards. Legitimate fertility of schizophrenics was slightly reduced. A high frequency of marital breakdown further diminished their fertility; but this was partially compensated for by high illegitimate fertility. The relevance of this to population genetics is discussed: Marriage and fertility of women suffering from affective disorders was similar to that of normal women, although these patients had a high frequency of marital breakdown.
