Based on the 1998 stage musical by director John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask. Hedwig, a genderqueer punk rock singer from East Berlin, tours the US with her band, the Angry Inch, shadowing the tour of arena rock star Tommy Gnosis, her former lover and protégé who stole her songs. As she travels, she tells the story of her life, culminating in a botched sex reassignment surgery to escape East Berlin with Tommy, immediately before the Berlin Wall fell and Tommy left her.
