Stephen Ward Sears (born July 27, 1932) is an American historian specializing in the American Civil War. Sears is a graduate of Oberlin College. As an author, he has concentrated on the military history of the American Civil War, primarily the battles and leaders of the Army of the Potomac. He was employed as editor of the Educational Department at the American Heritage Publishing Company. This is one of The American Heritage Library series. For nearly four decades American Heritage has made a particular point of insuring that the Second World War was indeed a war that history will honor. Its pages have portrayed the many dimensions of this greatest of twentieth-century conflicts and have cast the struggle in many perspectives, some of them unique. As I understand it, the Century Company commissioned this post-Civil War illustrated history in 1888. Somewhere along the line it was not published and the artwork that was the basis for it disappeared only to reappear in 1973 when it was rediscovered in the possession of a Civil War General s family. Shortly thereafter, the American Heritage Publishing Company acquired the collection of artwork and has produced this colossal book- "The Century Collection of Civil War Art." "There are 724 pictures by some 50 artists and 30 maps an incredibly rich iconography of the entire Civil War" This large hard cover book "reproduces all the illustrations in ordered array well captioned ad accompanied by a narrative that puts them all in context to tell the entire story of the conflict." This very large hard cover book (11 x 13 ½ inches 400 pages) was published by the American Heritage Publishing Co of New York with Stephen W. Sears as editor dated 1974 and I believe the First Edition. There is a Foreword by Bruce Catton. It is bound in tan cloth boards with a dark brown cloth quarter spine with gilt titles; it is protected by a pictorial dust jacket. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket has a fair amount of edge wear with small chips and tears and is also price-clipped. The hard covers are very lightly bumped on the front cover and have a small tape mark (from repairs to the dust jacket) on the rear board. Inside the book has an expansive gift inscription on the front endpaper but this is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages and plates are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.".
