It was built in the seventeenth century as a tomb for a beloved Mogul empress, but its funerary nature has been overshadowed by its perfection and romance. Although better remembered for his architectural achievements, Shah Jahan, the Mogul emperor who commissioned the Taj Mahal, was actually a discerning patron of paintings, decorative objects, and textiles. By examining the record of his wide-ranging connoisseurship, Romance of the Taj Mahal seeks to establish a fuller context for understanding the unique fame of this magnificent monument. There has not previously been an exhibition or book that surveys all the arts created during the reign of Shah Jahan. Thus Romance of the Taj Mahal affords a special opportunity to explore the extraordinary character of the arts from Shah Jahan's reign (1628-58) and their interrelated nature The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Indian art in the world, has long been committed to demonstrating the importance and richness of Indian artistic traditions. This goal has been particularly well served by this multifaceted investigation of an extraordinary period of Indian culture. By including material as varied as drawings by Rembrandt and paintings and photographs by contemporary artists, Romance of the Taj Mahal also provides valuable insight into the ways in which Shah Jahan and the Taj Mahal influenced subsequent generations throughout the world, a fascinating demonstration of the far- ranging power of art." excerpt from the foreword by Earl A. Powell III, Director, Los Angeles County Museum of Art.…
