Zustand: as new. Durham : Duke University Press, 2014. Paperback. xi,281 pp. - Officially confined to red-light districts, brothels in British India were tolerated until the 1920s. Yet, by this time, prostitution reform campaigns led by Indian, imperial, and international bodies were combining the social scientific insights of sexology and hygiene with the moral condemnations of sexual slavery and human trafficking. These reformers identified the brothel as exacerbating rather than containing "corrupting prostitutes" and the threat of venereal diseases, and therefore encouraged the suppression of brothels rather than their urban segregation. In this book, Stephen Legg tracks the complex spatial politics surrounding brothels in the interwar period at multiple scales, including the local, regional, national, imperial, and global. Campaigns and state policies against brothels did not just operate at different scales but made scales themselves, forging new urban, provincial, colonial, and international formations. In so doing, they also remade the boundary between the state and the social, through which the prostitute was, Legg concludes, "civilly abandoned." Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9780822357735. Keywords : INDIA, prostitution.

Paperback. Zustand: As New. Reprint. Contents List of abbreviations. Archival references. Series editor's preface. Preface. 1. Imperial Delhi. 2. Residential and racial segregation a spatial archaeology. 3. Disciplining Delhi. 4. Biopolitics and the urban environment. 5. Conclusions Within and beyond the city. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Drawing upon the theories and methodologies of governmentality as presented in Michel Foucault's translated lecture courses Spaces of Colonialism provides an analysis of the attempts made by the Government of India to secure and order Delhi the capital of the Raj from 1911 to 1947. Following the path from New Delhi to Old Delhi this book contains a mass of new empirical data that illustrates how these seemingly separate cities were united by shared political rationalities and landscapes of control. Beginning with a critical analysis of the colonial governmentality literature and a situation of Delhi in the history of India this text examines the residential landscape of New Delhi the policing of the new and old cities and the biopolitical needs and improvements that arose in the urban landscape. The formative role of problematizations and resistance in driving these changes is stressed throughout and provides a historic basis for a contemporary critique of colonial governmentality. This ground breaking text is the first comparative history of New and Old Delhi making it an essential resource for scholars looking to stay ahead in a number of fields including cultural theory colonial history urbanism and post colonial studies. 254 pp.
