Browse this Book on GoogleEnduring Motives examines tradition and religious beliefs as they are expressed in landscape, the built environment, visual symbols, stories, and ritual. Bringing together archaeologists and Native American experts, this volume focuses on long-lived religious traditions of the native peoples of the Americas and how religion codifies, justifies, and reinforces these traditions by placing a high value on continuity of beliefs and practice. Using clues from the archaeological record to piece together the oldest religions of the Americas, Enduring Motives is organized into four parts. Part 1 creates continuity through structure, iconography, and sacred stories that correspond to culture-specific symbolic representations of the universe. Part 2 explores the encoding of tradition in place and object, or how people use objects to enliven tradition and pass it on to future generations. Part 3 examines stability and change and shows how traditions can evolve over time without losing their core cultural significance. The final part recognizes deep-time traditions through the evidence of ancient cosmology and religious tradition. Spanning cultures as diverse as the Aztec, Plains Indians, Hopi, Mississippian, and Southwest Pueblo, Enduring Motives brings to light new insights on ancient religious beliefs, practices, methods, and techniques, which allow otherwise intangible facets of culture to be productively explored.

Zustand: as new. With essays by Lisa Saltzman and Mia L. Bagneris. New York : The Jewish Museum, under the auspices of the Jewish Theological Seminary, [2014]. Paperback. 95 pp. illustrations (chiefly color) ; 26 cm. - This exhibition brings together two New York painters whose works offer unique and compelling approaches to abstraction. Born one year apart, Lee Krasner (1908-84) and Norman Lewis (1909-79) shared similar family situations and came of age in the economic, social, and historic complexities of the 1930s. They formed their creative identities in the artistic and cultural ferment of New York City that was to catapult it to the center of the art world after World War II. Lee Krasner was born in Brooklyn to a Russian Jewish immigrant family. She studied at the Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design. From 1934 through 1943 she supervised a section of the mural division of the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. Krasner married the painter Jackson Pollock in 1945. Norman Lewis' parents were immigrants from Bermuda. His family lived on Lenox Avenue in Harlem. He studied drawing and commercial design in high school before joining the merchant marine and sailing throughout the Caribbean and South America. In the early 1930s Lewis worked with Augusta Savage, the founder and director of the Savage Studio of Arts and Crafts in Harlem. Like Krasner, he was a beneficiary of the public-works programs of the Depression years, teaching art under the auspices of the Federal Art Project. Krasner and Lewis reached their mature styles during the 1940s and 1950s. Their works of these years suggest intriguing parallels. Both painters developed many of the signature elements of Abstract Expressionism - a rejection of realist representation; a decentered, all-over approach to the picture plane; spontaneous, gestural brushwork; and a free use of non-naturalistic color. Both reveled in the sensual pleasures of design. A key aspect of their experimental method was the use of line - loose and organic or formal and gridlike. Both artists also drew upon sources with personal meanings: ancient and nonwestern art, contemporary music, forms of writing, references to urban life. The parallel viewing of two innovative mid-century painters offers insights into both their artistic achievements and this transformative era in America. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9780300206494. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Vindicated is the true story of a pastor who was falsely accused, federally indicted, and forced to fight for his life, his family, his faith, and his future-all while refusing to lie to survive. In October 2023, Stephen L. Brown was charged by the federal government with wire fraud related to COVID relief funds. Overnight, his name became a headline. His ministry was scrutinized, his reputation was questioned, and his freedom was placed on the line.Facing the possibility of decades in prison for a crime he did not commit, Brown made a decision few people make, and even fewer survive. He chose truth over convenience. He chose trial over a plea.He chose faith over fear. What followed was a battle not only in the courtroom, but in the mind, the spirit, and the soul. Vindicated walks readers through the pressure, torment, isolation, and uncertainty of standing innocent in a system designed to break people before a jury ever hears the truth. This is not a legal manual. This is not a motivational cliché.And this is not a story of bitterness. It is a story of endurance.Through personal testimony, spiritual insight, and firsthand experience, Vindicated reveals: - What it feels like to be innocent and still accused- How fear attacks the mind long before a verdict is read- Why many people plead guilty even when they are not- How faith is tested when outcomes are unknown- What it means to endure without losing yourselfIn May 2024, after a federal trial, Stephen L. Brown was unanimously found NOT GUILTY.But Vindicated is not just about a verdict. It is for anyone facing a season where the truth feels buried, the pressure feels unbearable, and the outcome feels uncertain. If you have ever been misunderstood, falsely accused, overwhelmed, or forced to endure something you did not choose, this book is for you.Vindication is not just about being cleared. It is about standing in truth when the cost is high and trusting God with whatever comes next.
