[a good sound copy, light shelfwear, some dust-soiling and light spotting to top of text block; the jacket is lightly soiled, with just a bit of edgewear, and some fading along the spine]. "Preeminently a radical treatment of the sexual question," this book provides a psychoanalytical take on marriage and, while advocating for monogamy as "the ideal of civilized man," also makes a brief for what is termed (by the blurb-writer, anyway) "free marriage." An uncommon work by this author, described in his dust-jacket bio as "the first collaborator of Freud's," having co-published with him and Alfred Adler the first psychoanalytic periodical, Zentralblatt für Psychoanalyse; he was also once described as "Freud's most distinguished pupil." (The blurb also states that "after five years he severed his relationship with Freud," but that kind of gets it backwards: it was Freud who broke it off in 1912, attributing the split, as he himself put in a 1924 letter to Stekel, "exclusively [to] your personal qualitiesusually described as character and behavior." Ouch. Coming from Sigmund Freud himself: double ouch.) At any rate, at the time this book appeared Stekel was arguably as well-known in America as Freud himself, more than a dozen of his books having been published in translation over the preceding decade. (A review of another of his books published here in 1931, "A Primer for Mothers," referred to him as an "internationally famous and ultra-modern psychoanalyst.") I've been unable to pin down the publication history of the material in this book, described by Stekel in his Foreword as "collected essays"; although his Preface is datelined Vienna, 1930, there does not appear to have been a German-language version in book form. (It's notable, I think, that the American publishers of both his 1931 books -- the other was issued by Macaulay -- were a little bit less "respectable" than those of his earlier works, which came from houses like Liveright and Dodd, Mead. Godwin, in particular, put out quite a bit of erotica, usually of a "classy/classic" nature.) It's also stated in the jacket blurb that Dr. Stekel "is coming to America early next year," but it seems unlikely that that actually happened, as I've been unable to find any trace of press coverage, which such a visit certainly would have occasioned. (He was 63 when this book appeared, and died in London -- by overdosing on aspirin -- in 1940.).…
