In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: good. First Edition. Octavo, [xvi], 280 pages, cloth; dj chipped, archival repairs "Unfamiliar and startling ideas appear here in familiar and humorous form. And the humor of the cartoonists gains a new depth and meaning. In the first part, the psychiatric spyglass is t…urned on the average human being. The middle part accurately shows what is known, and what is not, about mental health and illness. And in the last part the spyglass is reversed, and turned on the psychiatrists themselves. Here is the book explaining psychiatry for which you have been waiting - clear, amusing, short, easy to read." Illustrated with 100 cartoons by these masters and more: Charles Addams, Peter Arno, George Baker, Berenstain, Cobean, Abner Dean, Sydney Hoff, Hank Ketcham, Kovarsky, Ed Nofziger, Virgil Partch, O. Soglow, Saul Steinberg, James Thurber. Note: This book opens with an Rx from Fritz Redlich, M.D. who advises, " 1. Look at the cartoons and enjoy them as much as you can. 2. Read the text when you feel like it, allowing it to combine with the cartoons in arousing your own memories and feelings. 3. Let some time pass. 4. Look at the cartoons again. You may know more about them and yourself and enjoy them even more. 5. For anyone interested in human problems." Note: The Layman's Preface discusses for pages the whys and wherefores of the inclusion of cartoons in this humorously serious book. Chapter I is "The Key to Laughter: Repression".

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Printing [Stated]. xii, [2], 528 pages. illus., index, DJ is price clipped and has slight wear to edges. A personal memoir by the New York Republican senator depicts his long political career, his many political colleagues including Dewey, Rockefeller, and L…BJ, the consequences of Watergate, and the future of his party. Jacob Koppel Javits (May 18, 1904 March 7, 1986) was an American lawyer and politician from the U.S. state of New York. A member of the Republican Party, he served in both chambers of the United States Congress, a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1947 to 1954 and a member of the United States Senate from 1957 to 1981. He also served as Attorney General of New York from 1955 to 1957. Generally considered a liberal Republican, he was often at odds with his own party. A supporter of labor unions, the Great Society, and the civil rights movement, he played a key role in the passing of civil rights legislation. An opponent of the Vietnam War, he drafted the War Powers Resolution in 1973. In the Senate, Javits supported much of President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society programs and civil rights legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He voted for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution but came to question Johnson's handling of the War in Vietnam. To rein in presidential war powers, Javits sponsored the War Powers Resolution. Javits also sponsored the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, which regulated defined-benefit private pensions. Javits died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1986. Derived from a Kirkus review: Admirers of New York's longtime (1957-81) liberal Republican senator cherish their memories: Javits, a formidable campaigner. He might have been a v-p or presidential candidate. Out to win a Congressional seat in 1946 (after WW II exposure to "Potomac fever"), Javits searched for a "Democratic district where the chances of a Republican victory would be slight--and where I, a neophyte, might be welcomed by the Republican organization." His upset victory then made him instantly known. Eager for local office after three terms in the House, he overlooked a first Dewey rebuff to put himself forward again--on the basis that "I'm the only Republican who can beat FDR Junior" for the attorney-generalship. That triumph--the only victory on the ticket--set Javits up to run, against Robert Wagner, Jr., for the Senate. He speaks out, too, on the discomforts of being an urban, liberal Republican legislator--committed to civil rights, low-cost housing and rent control, health care, Israel, internationalism--and specifically on how he progressed from "cold-shouldered outsider to respected insider" in the Senate. He hedges on Rockefeller and remains discreet about Nixon. Not without specifically political interest. George Tames (Author photograph) (illustrator).
