Hardcover. Zustand: LIKE NEW. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: FINE. 336pp. FINE copy in FINE jacket, AS NEW. From the DJ: 'Gottlieb Biedermeier, a teasing middle-class papa best known for his appearances in a Munich satirical weekly, came to fame in the 1840s. A 'god-loving everyman,' he represented the typical German citizen, more interested in a comfortable home and a convivial family than political activism. The poets who created him, needling the bourgeoisie and signing their own work 'Biedermeier,' weren't thinking about the elegant housewares that now bear their pseudonym, varied by a letter. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, their alter ego had retroactively given his name to the aesthetics and philosophies of the period his attitudes suited so well, from 1815 to 1835. Biedermeier arts and crafts were orderly, frugal and simplistic. They tended to pare forms to their essentials, merging the useful with the beautiful. Eighteenth-century gilding and frills were stripped away in favor of the natural beauty of materials and shapes. What began as an intellectual critique soon developed into a new model for living. Biedermeier examines Biedermeier painting, furniture and decorative arts as a style and a cultural attitude. Visual arts of the period, which are still largely unstudied as distinct from Romanticism or the Nazarenes, are highlighted here in the work of Georg Friedrich Kersting and Eduard Gaertner. With nearly 300 outstanding examples of German, Austrian and Czechoslovakian paintings, furniture, related decorative arts and works on paper, this is a superb document of the innovative character of the period and its importance as a precursor to modernism.'.

Première édtionCe livre présente l'artisanat d'art contemporain. (plus de 100 artistes)Contemporary Crafts and the Saxe Collection was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same title, organized by The Toledo Museum of Art and on view there from September 12 through November 14, 1993. Crafts in the U.S. took a revolutionary turn around 1950, as glassblowers, ceramists, textile artists and others grappled with the conceptual concerns of modernist painting and sculpture. Known today as the studio craft movement, the torrent of creativity unleashed during the last four decades is well-represented in this survey. in-8°.

Zustand: Sehr gut. Stein, Laurie (illustrator). Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Alya and Atik are stars. Their job is to twinkle in the night sky over Earth and for billions of years they do it well. Plants stretch towards them. Animals look up at them. And, eventually, humans gaze up at them and marvel. But then humans invent powerplants, factories and cars, and smog pours into Earth's atmosphere. It becomes harder and harder for Alya and Atik to do their jobs until, finally, the stars yell at Earth and Earth feels sick and begins to shake and things look pretty dire. The clueless king's response is to command Earth to stop shaking. But a little girl named Axiom tells the king to hush then tells humans what they must do to make the Earth feel better. When the Earth Shook provides a mythical framing for kids to understand that it will be their job to help save the Earth. Bravo, Axiom! Keep using that huge megaphone until the earth no longer shakes! Axiom's list of instructions to humans; some well-known and others new but critically important appears in the back of the book.
