In 1889, his family settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. From the 1894-1898, he served an apprenticeship with the American Fine Art Company, a lithographic firm, where he was introduced to photography, purchasing his first camera in 1895. In 1899, he began exhibiting in photographic salons, and in 1900, he met Alfred Stieglitz, who purchased three photographs. Soon after, he departed for Europe, settling in Paris, exhibiting in salons there and in London, continuing to send photographs to American exhibitions. In 1902 he was back in New York, and joined Stieglitz, as a founding member of the Photo-Secession. In 1911, he was commissioned by Art et Decoration for fashion photographs, an application he practiced for most of his career. Steichen's career was the most varied of the members of the Photo-Secession; an accomplished photographer and painter, Lt. Commander and director of U.S. Naval Photography during WW II, and Director of the Department of Photography for the Museum of Modern Art.
